Not really that much of a newbie, but something I've wondered -- can those orbit lines on the HUD be toggled off without toggling the HUD off?

Aha. Missed that, and just the "=" key. Cool.
It may be unbound by default, I'm not sure. (or it could be an "o" key) .So check and re-bind it where you want it.
It defaults to "=".

Yeah me too. In fact I turned mine off the first time I started playing. I personally think that they look silly.
I only wish that those 'speed line' things at the sides of the hud could be turned off too.
If I want to 'see' how fast I am going, I'll just look at my speed indicator or look at the space dust passing by.
I played for most of my first year with them off, I think it's good to do that because you learn how to land on planets much better, watching speed and height, angles of attack, while I have them on now I hardly use them for judging approach.
You don't need to go into settings, can toggle under SHIP in the right panel .. I think it's the third tab down.
