I have never touched PP or taken any notice of the BGS, but yes it does count as basic background to the galaxy and by definition is not "cool", it's just "there", and of course you mean "some people", personally I am quite happy being a single wandering space ship pilot doing what I want, where...

A swarm of chittering voices cried out and were suddenly silenced... You did it! An armada of pilots from all throughout the Milky Way gathered together to strike down the Titan Taranis, causing a catastrophic failure of it's core and systems. The resulting explosions burst across the sky...
