General / Off-Topic Too close to home :( People suck

Man shoots at Indian people in Overland Park, KS, kills one of them.

Austin's Bar and Grill @ 151st and Mur-Len. Spent my teenage years at 143rd and Pflumm...not far away, 5 minute drive.

The number of times I've had to fear for my life when some racist bigot is screaming at me to go back to Mexico can be counted on one hand, but one time is too many. (Not Mexican, btw, Kansas born with heritage from Spain, Germany, Ireland, China and Philippines). My surname comes from a family living here since the Irish potato famine, and we have more than a few prestigious institutions and buildings carrying our namesake (not that i get to see a dime of that wealth).

I feel like some of these people are feeling emboldened lately...it is dangerous and has already affected the way I live my life. I haven't gone to some of my favorite places since the election out of pure fear. My local dive bar, my favorite camping spot and my favorite river are all on hold until I hear from my friends that things are okay there. I don't know though...I'd gotten used to the confederate flags and most people, regardless of color or flag just enjoy having a good time, fishing, drinking and cooking over the fire.

I'm at a crossroads. I have a deep love for this land and country but I feel more and more, every year and especially this one, that I'm not wanted by my own countrymen. It angers me immensely and has made me realize why some people like me become radical. I feel like it is making ME racist as I find myself seriously distrustful of any white man that looks uneducated.

People suck

I'm sorry to hear that.

It is natural that, if you feel like you are 'under attack', you will think attack thoughts in return out of defence. Thus any racist notions you have are a defence.

Forgiveness is the most important, yet the hardest lesson?

Plain and simply suck, that people do these hate crimes, and I'm sorry to hear that.

And while I don't want to make it political especially with the climate and easy access to guns in US, unfortunately I think we will be seeing more of this :(

So right. I'm trying really. I just signed up to start a non-partisan activist group in my city. We will be working to fight corruption and to end billionare influence on our representation. I hope to create a coalition for conservatives and liberals to take back our government from the likes of Koch, Buffet, and Walton.

Politics is at the heart of all of it. Unavoidable, really. Guns are a tough one for me. I do believe we should be able to purchase and own guns but the ease with which they get into criminal and insane hands is way too alarming.

7 people were murdered in Chicago by gun violence just yesterday...

Some people are thoroughly awesome. This case has revealed the both the worst and the best of humanity.

The link you posted was a little short on content for whatever reason (not by your intention).

I get you now btw. I don't think you and I will normally agree but I get why we don't. You want a Star Trek type no nationality existence but I think that is impossible; at least for now.
