Too much frustrating

I am totally frustrated after only few hours. Stuck in the 3rd mission, and no hope to move on.
Controls are clunky, ship is or unresponsive or too much: aim is impossible,
i m p o s s i b l e ! No matter if I use the assist ( with no assist I just spin aimlessly ).
AI never miss, no matter if the enemy ship is so far that I cannot see it on the monitor, the Ai do see me, and do blow me up in matter of seconds. Or worse, is behind me, and my ship cannot move that iron buttocks at half the speed I'd need.
It's like play DarkSouls in space.
Too too too much frustrating.
Not even the multiplayer is so hard.

EDIT: Thanks guys, and lets hope that, one day I'll be able to at least SEE what is killing me. :)
BTW, I use an Xbox gamepad for Windows.

Honestly take a break.

I think the NPC's were made a little harder after several players complained that the rats were always going to be easy mode when compared to PK'ing. (So the devs decided to have some fun :) )

Try logging into multiplayer for a while and just cruise around getting a feel for the ship. If interdicted then 4 pips to engines and run away.

May I ask what controls you're using? Mouse and Keyboard?
I personally found those to be very difficult in Elite, and with a Joystick the game really got much more enjoyable for me.

Keep at it! Practice & practice some more u will get the hang of it. Watch some of the vids on youtube for handy tips......cmdr Sam has done some good stuff on combat.

Don't give up

If this is how the game is intended, I hope I'll get refunded.

I know how you feel I am trying to use a mouse and its not much fun. I resorted to going back to the first scenario just to spend some time getting used to the controls. The sidewinder in the third scenario seems to get real tight and then as it pass's reverses or turns assist off and flips backwards. A big dead zone was stopping me from getting on target when he was at a distance. Let call it calibrating the controls and I need calibrating.

Regards Kevin.

the 3rd mission is very tricky now for a new commander. but there are a few things to consider, given that you have set up controls right

- hit that blue sweet spot to get maximum maneuverability
- control your weapon/engine/shield power
- must get thrust working with your controls. try mission 2 with up/down and (or) left right thrusters
- try and follow the solar fluke in mission 2, just stay on his six

edit: note to FDEV - lol maybe turn mission 3 and its ai down a wee bit ;)

I use a xbox360 controller ( for windows ).
Yeah, one of the points is that AI never miss, no matter if the enemy ship is so far that I cannot see it on the monitor, the Ai do see me, and do blow me up in matter of seconds. Or worse, is behind me, and my ship cannot move that iron **** at half the speed I'd need.
Also if I go on multiplayer, get intercepted and no matter how fast I run, or how much I dodge, I pop like a soap bubble.
Dogfighting is...well, just it 's not.
It's sad because I was waiting this Sim with sooo much expectation... :(
The universe, the art, the sound, are breathtaking.

( BTW, the gamepad is better than key, but it has too few buttons, lol, way too few )

EDIT: grammar

Fly your ship like you'd fly a plane in an atmosphere.
In other words, forget yaw.
Elite doesn't fly like a character on a 2D surface game like all the 1st person shooters etc...
It's three dimensional flight, try and avoid the trap of x,y and use z,y.
Roll and pitch, not yaw and pitch.
Practice, practice, practice. You'll get it in the end.

It's my first time and I pwn most AIs, whereas players tear me a new one in no time.

I don't think the AI is really good. What kills you in Single Player is lack of situational awareness and experience in controlling your space craft.

Keep learning. :) Also, press cursor up a few times, and set your throttle so it's right in the blue/white area of the speed indicator. That means you got optimum maneuverability.

Don't forget to adjust deadzones and sensitivity. Helped me quite a bit.

I fired her up tonight.

1st time I got to that 3rd mission I could not believe it.... a 1 on 1 with a lousy side winder and I got taken out.... 3 times.

but there is certainly a knack to it and on the 4th time, with a bit of controller tinkering I got past it.

indeed, I then went on and completed all 9 missions back to back without fail.

I think that 1 mission is the hardest of the bunch.

Control wise I am using a sidewinder flight stick, AND an xbox 360 pad.

I still have a bit of tinkering on the controls but I have to rig summat up to be able to use blind for once i get the rift.

There are a LOT of controls!!.

for me the way to beat that sidewinder was mixing in a bit of FA off. I found it much easier to keep the blighter in my sights and off my backside then,

I did a bunch of the Alpha 1 missions with definite ease. Today I got my ass handed to me by the sidewinder vs sidewinder mission.

Thing is, I don't think it's that much of a technical flaw but the fact that the Sidewinder flies a bit like a particularly unwieldy brick. It's incredibly hard to shake anyone off, and even if you get hit once out of 5 it'll eventually whittle you down and well, kill you. The only way I found to progress in that level was to cut thrust, reverse, get super close and start circling my enemy so he got disoriented and I could shoot him a bunch of times. Only engagement I've had in multiplayer so far has been two ships hijacking me in a stock Sidewinder. I barely made it out alive, much less even hit them *once* with my weapons.

I can totally relate to someone who finds this game frustrating. I gotta say tho, it's goddamn enjoyable compared to X3's one-shot combat.

Absolutely bang on. Someone needs to go do some fungeneering.

Have you tried reverse throttle and doing a three-point turn to get it off your tail?

Pretty much the only valid tactic, and only because super close and super slow seems to be a better dogfighting technique than super fast and super far on a Sidewinder.

When interdicted, max out the engine power while the ship is still spinning. As soon as you can, point the nose away from them, hit max thrust and boost away. Boost again when speed starts to drop, and again. Now you are probably far away to re-engage the FSD.

The comments sound like you are unused to flight sims. A few hours will not be enough to master this game. When trying to turn hard, remember to get your speed to the blue zone halfway up the speed indicator.

All those youtube videos, it's just normal people playing the game, stick with it, and you'll get it.

I'm with the OP on this one. I'm an old hand at Elite and all its sequels and clones and I happily use a keyboard. But that Sidewinder vs Sidewinder mission is for the crows. In the Alpha 1.1 version it was a relatively light introduction to combat, now it's just a bundle of bad design decisions. I think FD need to tune the AI right down on that. When your introduction to combat is simply flying in circles trying to even get the enemy on the screen long enough to get off a shot and yet the enemy ship is whizzing around and constantly strafing you, then you'll quickly go and find something less frustrating to do with your time.

There's steep learning curve and there's futility leading to dumping the game and asking for a refund/badmouthing the game all over the forums (which is probably worse for the company in the long run).

this game is intended to last for years.
so it has a steep leaning curve.
achievements will in the end mean something to you.
be patient.you'll find the best way to get there.
