Too much.

As a casual player I just think there's a little too much going on now.

Don't misunderstand me, it's great that there are so many avenues to take and I appreciate the effort that has gone into making the game more varied but it's all getting a bit clogged up now.

The game just seems to be adding complexity without clarity.

While the missions/engineers/crafting is all welcome it does seem to be swamping the pure joy of just being one person in a ship lost in the wonders of the universe.
It's all getting a little too categorical.

Perhaps the dilution of the experience is inevitable but I'd just like to go back to feeling in awe of my environment rather than flying from one tick box to the next.

It is like real life - let it go. I fly Cobra between star systems, browsing around, doing missions I find interesting. Not grinding for anything.

Easy. You aren't forced to do anything.

I agree. I don't mean that I feel forced to do this stuff, it's just becoming a little over-complicated to engender that feeling of wonder.
The game seems to be taking on the feel of dice rolling rather than mystery.

Long distance exploration outside of inhabited space is still (thankfully) relatively untouched. If you're feeling a bit swamped by all the other stuff, it's not a bad way to take a break from the insanity of the bubble. That, and I think the majority of the best things to look at in Elite are far outside of human space anyway.

Out there, it's just you, your ship, and the about 400 billion solar systems.

Fully agree.

@OP: Try this if you haven't already.

I work 48 hours a week, every week. I've got four kids. There's no way I have time to do everything in Elite, but sometimes I have enough time to do something. That's enough.

100,000 ly into my journey out into the black, I agree, it's makes a nice break to go exploring. Take a friend along, it's even better with them. I took 1000 along with me on Distant World's..

interesting. I feel it's having the opposite. 2.1 is now closer to the game I want. More complexity and layers. I'm trying more things now than ever before and feel much more connected to my ship as I work on modifications. I'll stop at 2 or 3 signals per mission now and I'm having a great time.

Well elite is the antidote to casual games , the game is deep , but all those things are optional , so you dont have to worry about them

But what if today was the first time you'd loaded up a Space Sim?

Absolutely agree that there is no clarity whatsoever regarding implementation, but I really don't see how it detracts from one-ship-lost-in-the-wonders-of-the-universe thing. You can still do what you were able to do just fine.

Eject/sell your cargo hold and jettison engineer materials, ignore it completely its the only way. Otherwise because of the lack of storage you will get on a rat wheel and get stuck with cargo you need for engineers and have no space left to "go about your daily business". Engineers is like creeping rott, if you let it take hold it will ruin you game.

Yeah that's what I've done, my only goal using the Engineers is lvl 5 on shields (which can wait for months), each ship limitation is fine, just better shields to be able to last a bit longer or run away. I burnt out my enjoyment of ED since 2.1 came out and just couldn't be ars ed to login last night, so tonight I've been doing missions/trading/refitting and getting my trusty ASP ready for a jaunt out of the bubble, not tried exploring yet.

Yeah, last night I went to a couple systems and paid off some fines from an earlier failed mission, ran a couple of missions and got some materials I needed, investigated a couple of USS', wasted a half hour driving around on an empty planet (did discover a new material though) and did a little bounty hunting, finishing the evening with an epic battle against a deadly Asp that left me with one working MC, a cracked canopy, and 30% hull, but finally came out on top. No insurance claim, so I considered it a "good" evening.
