Toolfa

So, as I understand it, the Stellar Forge creates an approximation of the galaxy (to the extent practical). Most of the stars around Sol are real —Epsilon Indi & Eridani, EZ Aquarius, YZ Ceti, and, of course Alpha Centauri and Bernards Star, but what about Toolfa? AFAIK, there isn’t an actual star called Toolfa, is there??? 🤔

In real life (and noted in-game, but with less prominence) it's called GJ 1061.

A lot of the inhabited systems have been renamed by their inhabitants to something less cataloguey.

Additionally, there are some legacy systems that are not real world systems placed in the game.

Or rather, if a real world system is in approximately the same place as a fictional legacy system, I guess the real world system would then be renamed to the legacy system.

There are still some very-close-to-Sol stars that are entirely fictional. Duamta comes to mind. An F-class star just a few LYs from Earth would be one of the brightest stars in our night sky.

I assume Duamta, and the others, come about from having to superimpose the known stars somewhere into the procedurally-generated galaxy. They didn't generate a procedurally-generated galaxy with a "hole" in it, to be filled by the known stars, though there is indeed a "hole" in tems of black holes and neutron stars, which were excluded from forming within 1000 LYs of Sol's X and Z co-ordinates.

The part about Black Holes and Neutron Stars isn't strictly true.

For example HD 100867 is located at 1,890 -166 909 and contains two Neutron Stars. However, the primary star is B class. One Neutron Star is binary with the primary, the second is binary with with primary pair.

I believe the issue with the Stellar Forge is that it doesn't create PRIMARY Black Holes or Neutron Stars in the 1,000LY bands.

Another thing to keep in mind is that some kickstarter donors got to name their own stars, planets and stations, hence some of the really weird one around.

£500 - Have a space station named* after you, plus all rewards above.
  • Estimated delivery: Mar 2014

£750 - Have a planet named* after you, and an invitation to the UK launch party, plus all rewards above.
  • Estimated delivery: Mar 2014

£3,000 - Have a frontier star system named* after you, and a 'special thanks' game credit, plus all rewards above.

...and "HD 100867" isn't a procedurally-generated system. It's a hand-placed system. The point of the "hole" was, presumably, to ensure the only black holes and neutron stars present near Sol would be either real-world ones or ones FD specifically put in place (like in Maia).

Another thing to keep in mind is that some kickstarter donors got to name their own stars, planets and stations, hence some of the really weird one around.

According to Kickstarter, only 25 people reached the "name a star system" funding level, with the top 6 getting the right to name two star systems. That gives only 31 star systems with kickstarter-backer-supplied names - and one of those was the Founders World system. There are 20,000 inhabited star systems in ED plus a whole bunch of other "named star systems", so the vast majority of the weird and wonderful star system names in ED come from the fertile minds of the ED programmers.

I'm pretty sure "Stapled Peacock Flesh" in Calhuacan would have been a backer-named planet... unless "stapled peacock flesh" is the punchline from an obscure Monty Python skit. While only 31 star systems are backer-named, there are (according to Kickstarter) 141 backer-named planets and 254 backer-named space stations in the game.

Some backer-added names are obscure - like "THFC-Est1882" in Bast (well, that one's obscure unless you're a Tottenham Hotspurs fan). Others (like "Big Harry's Monkey Hangout" in Jotunheim) are much more blatant.

Which also makes one wonder... how bad did a name have to be before FD rejected it? We know that Hart Station in Bast was originally submitted as "White Hart Road" (the name of the then-home ground of the Hotspurs), but this was toned down by FD, presumably to prevent football-related violence from breaking out there.
