The so-called "handouts culture" of "benefits Britain" will have to stop soon anyway. The government is not a magic money tree and the £79 billion black hole created by Brexit will have to be paid for by someone. The benefits bill will be the very first thing on the chopping block. Very likely a food stamp only program will soon be introduced where claimants get certain food, energy, and second hand clothing only. No internet, satellite TV or indeed any TV, etc. The normal crap about "helping them" off ciggys and booze will trotted out.

I am getting sick of all this and want to see it all burn down. Lawyers, bankers, politicians and all the other blood suckers, that recommend and support these cuts to the weakest and most in need; yet at the same time, are over paid by the state.
The 80% of people that were not effected by those they voted into power, don't care about the other 20%. Unfortunately that 80%, will soon be 60% and then 50%, but then it will be too late. Things like the NHS and other support networks will be gone, gone forever.

The very words of our recently departed, and hugely popular prime minister...so sorry to see the back of him. Those words always stuck in my mind as particularly offensive but however...he got his reply and now the next round of corrupt imbeciles take his place.
Comments were made which were offensive to those with certain mental disabilities...he got pulled up on them and was forced to say sorry which he did. Even labour are happy with the result. Also whatever happens, the proposed changes have to make it through both houses which would be lots of fun. Didnt even make headline news and came after the commercial break.
On a lighter note, we have an election this week which will also be lots of fun...Ive personally refused to vote at all because I feel nothing will ever change anyway. We maybe replace a few corrupt politicians with even more corrupt politicians who all wanna keep in with the EU. Im having issues because Im thinking whats the point of this? They are not listening...so we will have to shout louder until they do.
Either way, Im not voting...Ive grown tired of their little games so Im not gonna play them anymore ^

Lawyers don't make a lot of money in the UK. The typical take-home pay of a criminal barrister is generally around 21k-27k. My girlfriend went into the civil side of law, particularly employment law, and ended up in corporate HR pretty much because her experience of law was a very long working week without much in the way of pay.

But that money doesn't go to the lawyers. It goes towards the cost of holding the enquiries. The costs of compiling reports, the costs of hiring a venue, the costs of bringing people from all corners of the world and then hosting them in a hotel for days while they give evidence and answer questions.
An inquiry is going on right now into the benefits sanctions regime. Should the inquiry go forward? Or should it be scrapped and the government simply continue with sanctions without even looking at the effect they're having?
Government is an expensive project.
Oh yes the Tories would love that idea. Lets not have any enquiries into the latest way to kick the poor, as it will cost too much. No, lets have done with it and demand the money back from the bankers.

If a politician is honest they'd say something like:

Factor in healthcare, defense, law and order, government, communities (parks, firestations, litter bins, graffiti removal, street lighting etc), international business (consulars, diplomats, trade delegations), auditing (stuff like Ofwat and Ofgem etc) and even if you taxed the bankers and the banks themselves until they were in their underwear in a cardboard box it still wouldn't make a dent.

The fact is that right now... pre-Brexit... these are the times the poor of the UK are going to remember with a lot of whistful nostalgia. As bad as it might seem to be right now it's pretty good. I know that comes across as condescending and insulting elitism from someone who doesn't know what he is talking about, but just bear with me for a second.
Countries like Brazil, Argentina, the Philippines, Singapore, etc don't have such public health services and welfare provisions. As bad as British people think they've had things under austerity, it is still far better than most places. Free healthcare? Everywhere I've ever been is amazed when they hear about it. One girl from Trinidad I met who needs regular insulin and humira injections actually thought I was lying about the NHS just to make her feel bad about her medical condition.
But if the proposed "tax haven" plan is the future then those countries are the sorts of economies that the UK is going to emulate, and the society will become much the same.
Welfare in the UK is finished. There is no way it can exist in any modern nation which behaves in the way the UK is behaving. If you intentionally make yourself poorer, then you can't continue to live the good life. The measures currently being brought in against the poor are just the first skirmishes in what is going to be a protracted and vicious onslaught unlike any seen before.

Up until that point I had a some sympathy with your predicament.
Immigrants have been paying into the UK system without taking nearly as much out. Immigrants have been shoring up deficiencies in the UK structural deficit and plugging serious gaps in the UK economy, doing jobs that natives aren't able or willing to do. Immigrants have been keeping the country afloat.
It is not the left-wing who have hammered welfare over the past 7 years. It wasn't The Guardian or The Independent who were screaming that "scroungers" be punished and that welfare be slashed. Iain Duncan-Smith was not given license to tear welfare apart by anyone except the right-wing.
Forget your own interpretation of reason. The above are completely verifiable facts. Whether you like them or not they are there. Without immigration, without the single market, and without the commerce and economic activity all of that brings, the UK is going to be considerably poorer. That deficit is going to increase. Someone is going to have to pay for it all one way or another. The government are going to have less money to spend. Businesses are going to want bigger incentives to stay in the UK to offset the costs of not being inside a prosperous free trade area.
Translation - they're going to take all of your welfare away, and without realizing it you're demanding they do it to you.

That's absolutely fine. But you have no right at all to complain about what happens next. When health and social security are reduced, and operations cancelled and people made homeless, all to keep taxes for corporations lower you can be content that "the elites" have been well and truly kicked (or as they would put it, become even richer at your expense).
