Torpedoes: Educate me

8-14% damage per torp on your average hull tank fdl or fas depending on if they're full of hrps simplex or packing an fsdi/ scoop.

PD doesn't work that well, last ship I fired torps on had one PD module and it didn't do jack.

They maintain a pretty good lock after the ship goes into stealth, so useful for when they drop out due to heat for a few seconds.

Need to be careful when you fire them - if you boost as you fire they'll hit you. If you fire too close to the target CMDR you'll either get splash damage or you run the risk of them hitting you (the video of effective use above actually shows one hitting the firing CMDR's hull). If they're fired at you, you can sometimes loop them back to the ship that fired them... I've been on the other side of that when I cut in front of 4 of my torps to brilliantly masslock someone. If you fire them from far away, fast ships will outrun them. I've had a dbs and clipper jump out before they hit.

Hope that helps. Watch some of Na'Qan's vids on youtube. That dude uses them pretty well. I know there's one vid of his wingmate getting my fas down to teens on the hull after I burned my FSD up.

I used to keep 2 torpedoes on the small points on my annie, but they're only good for a bit if security against hull tanking CMDR's.

I've since swapped to heat seeking missiles because you get much more ammo and they're great fun to use.

I fitted the torps yesterday and flew out to give them a try. Had some issues initially. First time out my torps had no ammo even though I had hit re-arm. Next time out I fired one torp at a Clipper that was destroyed by point defence, and for some reason my second torp didn't have ammo (again, after re-arming at the station).

Third attempt was more successful. I bound both torps to the same firegroup and took an assassination mission. Target was only a shieldless Hauler, but it was funny to watch it get one-shot by both torpedos.

Finally I just went to a HazRes and used them against a Deadly Anaconda once I dropped its shields. Took over 20% of its hull, which was nice. I can't really tell if there is a notable difference in my laser damage output without the 2x Pulse Lasers without doing a side by side controlled study, which I do not have the means to do.

Glad this thread has started, recently put a pair on my DBS to see what they did.

Found a wanted clipper in SC and pulled him, dropped his shields with c2 fixed beam and c2 plasma.

Tried first by going for the power plant from a perpendicular T angle but barely did any damage from 2 torpedoes

Should we just be targeting straight hull or modules?

I'll be trying more later on, will check back

Slow thread huh.

After multiple attempts of randomness getting anywhere between 1 and 30% on the larger ships I've decided that since I can only mount 2 on my DBS (Gotta keep the size 2s for beam and plasma) that spamming missiles works better at the moment.

Supposedly some love coming for the missiles IIRC I hope the statement includes a little bit of tuning for the torpedoes damage calculations.

Fingers crossed because I find them highly satisfying to fire.

Yea. I've noticed the torp damage to vary greatly. Most larger weapons seem to have a wide range in the damage they can cause. I can shoot the same ship with the Class 4 PA on my Conda three separate times and get three very different damage rolls. One shot will do 6-8%, one will do 0%, and one will do 18%. Angle of impact didn't seem to play that big a roll either.

The torpedo is my primary weapon of choice for PvP.

Before discovering their potential, I was getting tired of enemy commanders being able to either low-wake and recharge shields, or hi-wake and never see them again. OR they simply Combat Log.

The answer was high-alpha instant kill weapon, most of my targets are destroyed still trying to engage me, not running away, thats why I love tops so much, because I hate chasing them down.

Its all about getting the feel of your targets hull, soften them enough to keep them fighting, but low enough where 2-4 torps can surprise kill them. Cheers.

But it takes some patience to fire them at the right time.
