Torpeoes V Missiles

What's the difference between torpedoes and missiles.

I'd hazard a guess at torpedoes being "dumb fire" ie no guidance and missiles are guided to target by heat sig?

Anything else ? assuming the above was on or close to target.

Did a search but didn't find a description.

cheers

Generally, both can be heat-seeking, dumb-fire, guided or whatever.

The big difference tends to be in size, speed and payload.
Missiles movereallyreallyfastandblowyourwingofflikeaboltoflightning... whereas torpedoes tend to move much slower, but blow almost anything to kingdom come.

Torps tend to be what you use to kill a big Capship and various space sims often have missions where you, as a small fighter, have to chase down and destroy incoming torp salvos before they hit your carrier/mothership.
Torps are also usually very big, so a single-pilot combat vessel tends to carry only a few of them rather than full racks (think of the missiles you see on an AH-64 Apache) of them.

Another big difference: some torpedoes cost 15,000 credits each!

I have not tried them so this is just a complete guess but I would think missiles are hard hiting baddies that track their target and do big damage. Torpedoes are what we had in the original Elite when we launched them, they tracked the enemy and obliterated them in one go. Shooting them or and ECM was the only way to get away from them.

I had Torpedo's on my cobra a few weeks back. 4 in total, I could obliterate a drop ship with 2. Cost me 30000c

Wouldn't use them again unless I had money to throw away or was getting big bucks to take out a target. The game really needs to ability to fire them one at a time. I had to separate them into fire groups so I wouldn't fire 60000c worth of torpedo's in one go :)

Greetings all,
You'll find that the missiles normally have 5 or more in the 'ready' rack and numerous reloads. Can be seeking of dumb fire, and much cheaper.
- Missiles can be 'shot down' by defensive weapons systems, not so for the larger torpedo's
- The torpedo's are massive heat users, require a very large weapons bay, and have very little reloads. Can be seeking also. And cost many times more to outfit and use.
(although the entire point is moot, if you only need to hit them once.)
