Total claim costs

So i noticed that every time that you die the Total claim costs number is updated, the one in the right hand panel.
Why is this number updated if you're paying for it yourself and not claiming insurance to pay for it?

It's just a ticker so you can see how much you spent on rebuys.

You aren't paying the full replacement cost of your ship are you? The buy a new ship and then buy everything you had inside it cost.

Then no, you aren't paying it all by yourself.
