Newcomer / Intro Totally new to game. finally got past tutorial mission

so i'm loitering about the first station you get sent to...uhm...a few questions:

1) do i use "play elite horizons" or choose the "play elite"?
2) how many choose the open version of the game?
3) i'm outside "trevitrick" station and i've tried to dock a number of times at the pad...i swear i'm following the directions but every time i think i land okay in the blue circle i just impact the pad and nothing happens...am i missing something?
4) i'd like to practice mining...any quick way to get into it nearby?
5) uhm...how can i turn on newtonian physics to get the original elite feel?

btw, i think i have the mining resource 3rd party websites bookmarked from a while ago...i just want to test

HI and welcome! o7

1) "Elite" is the base game. "Horizons" the game + planets DLC
2) About a third I'd say
3) You have to be horizontal to the pad and facing the right way. Use the landing hologram in the middle of the HUD. If you see the ship facing you or from the side, you're wrong way around. When you look at the pad, you should have the "building" in front of you and the blast panels behind you.
4) Buy a mining laser, refinery and a cargo rack, find the closest planet with a ring around it, drop into the ring and blast away. (note: there's a lot more to that - you can watch some Tube tutorials, but for the start it's enough)
5) It's called "Flight Assist". Go to the controls settings to find out which key it's bound to. Then you can turn it on and off as you like.

Good luck!

1) Horizons is probably best.
2) FD say its the most popular mode. If true, its just lazyness. I never play open.
3) Landing Gear down, the right pad and the right way round (the Holo Number in front of you) are the normal ones
4) Dont yet, not in a Sidewinder
5) Flight Assist off is close to it, but be prepared to spin about until you get sick or give up, its a bit of a Ninja tactic for later.

5) uhm...how can i turn on newtonian physics to get the original elite feel?
Does not compute.
Original Elite did not have newtonian flight model.
The default in E: D is pretty close to that feel.

It you refer to Frontier: Elite 2 / Frontier: First Encounters, then Flight Assist OFF is the closest, but there are a couple of differences:
-ships have inertia concerning rotation too
-no damping on any axis
-yaw is very slow way of 'turning' the ship, roll + pitch is much quicker

1) You'll usually want "Horizons" (it only adds a few things, like some ships and some landable planets) toe the base game, "Elite". The few occasions where you want the base game come up once you get stuck (for one reason or other) on a planet's surface. Starting back in pain Elite will put you safely inside your ship in orbit.

2) Depends on who you ask. In general, Open is reasonably safe. In specific spots at specific times, though, a newbie in a basic ship has about the life expectancy of a pimple in a supernova.

3) Probably yes. Equally probably, only something small. If the circle is blue, landing gear down, facing the right way and getting your ship aligned parallel to the pad are the usual suspects. Depending which control scheme you use (and how you approach the pad), the latter can be a bit challenging.

4) Like Chris said - get a mining laser and a refinery, then find a ringed planet. In a Sidey, that's about it. Anything more elaborate will have to wait until you can get a bigger ship.

5) You're probably looking for FA-off. Have fun with it.

thank you everyone that was extremely helpful (i was getting everything right except the nose pointing in the right compass direction)

as for the original elite i must confess i never played it...i come from the game "JumpGate" (2000-2003) where it was real newtonian physics...totally sweet stuff. uhm...are you saying that i cannot drift to port and then turn my ship to face another direction (without powering thrusters or engine) and still go in the original direction?

In flight assis off mode you can change the ship facing as much as you like without the heading changing.
Just remember that when you start to turn, the turning won't stop until you counter the input yourself.

Or learn to control it. Some of us fly FA off exclusively. It is not hard once you manage to rewire your brain.
Just wondering if that's with a HOTAS? Tried a couple of years ago but every tiny nudge of the stick would send me into a hopeless spin (X56 that works fine with Evochron Legacy Newtonian flight).

About powering thrusters / engine, there's a bit more in it in the background, while from the player's perspective it is simple.

All ship facing changes that you do, happen when manouvering thrusters are fired, and that happens only if engines are powered.
But you do not need to apply the specific thrusters yourself, the ship does it based on your input concerning desired axis of rotation.

Also, when you want to apply acceleration along an axis, the ship fires relevant thrusters when you give the input.

Welcome to the Elite Galaxy commander!

I fly 99.9% of the time in open. But that's just me...

Maybe you've already found most of the resources listed below. If not, have a look at them and in any case don't hesitate to ask questions here in the forum.

In-game help is available in the form of menu links to the Pilot's Handbook and the Codex (right-hand cockpit panel 1st tab).
For a very good beginner's guide see: An in-depth beginner’s guide to Elite: Dangerous.
Tutorials covering all aspects of the game, many of them in the form of YouTube videos, are available from ED Tutorials.
There is a wealth of useful information available in these forums spread out over hundreds of threads. Thanks to commander @Alec Turner you can access all of that information and more via a single thread: Alec's best of the forum (and elsewhere) [v2].
Here is a good guide on the background simulation (BGS) that simulates the economical and political changes caused by player actions in inhabited systems.
Also check out the inara.cz and eddb.io websites with (almost) realtime info on practically everything in the game.
The coriolis.io and edsy.org websites let you design your ships before buying them.
There are many more Tools and Websites created by fans that make life in the galaxy better.
And last but not least, the Elite Dangerous Wiki contains extensive information on nearly all aspects of the game.

Welcome o7 commander. The info provided here is all good. My 2cents worth though is...YouTube is your friend. I got started watching Cmdr Hawkes and Cmdr Exegious plus a few others here and there; hugely helpful in getting me going in short order. I originally purchased Horizons and then bought ED:O a week or so after release. Once ED:O came out, I never once went back to Horizons. I would highly recommend Cmdr Hawkes Youtube videos on getting started in Elite. He has both a 2020 and 2021 version. Good luck, fly safe. Remember, Space cannot hurt you but it can kill you. :)
