Touch controls/Vive Wands? Muilticrew avatar mapping?

So is there any word on support for touch/wand controls?

  1. The very least I'm hoping to get at some point is just being able to see the controllers in the hud so I can at least pick them up without having to peek out of the headset to pull up the menu. I also use them to take screenshots (because I can't get it working using the gamepad).
  2. Nice to have would be being able to use them where you use the mouse in the game, like manipulating ingame menu's by pointing at stuff. Being able to manipulate the galactic map would probably feel mind blowing, like floating through space and swimming through it, if done right.
  3. And I can imagine it would be funny if you could touch the controls in the cockpit, like the joystick and the keyboard on the left and the throttle and possibly the holographic pips. I doubt this would control well but in a pinch it might work.

And wouldn't it be nice if other people could see where you were looking when they were in a multicrew seat next to you? Basically try to get the virtual avatar head to follow the tracked headset and sync that across to other people's computers when their view is very close to you (cockpit to cockpit or multicrew).

This has probably been asked to death but I can never get the search on this forum to co-operate...

  1. I bind everything to my HOTAS. No need for wands.
  2. I bind galaxy map controls to my HOTAS.
  3. I already touch the controls (my HOTAS) [big grin]

In all honesty your last point is the only one I would like to see (networked head tracking). I highly doubt it will appear though.

Completely pointless other than you last point about headtracking. If your hands are on your HOTAS its a PITA to feel for another controller (blind) to perform an action you can already do without that hastle. Yes motion controls are cool, but pointless in Elite at this time.

Seeing as you have forked out on a VR unit, if you haven't already, you might want to consider getting a HOTAS and buying Voice Attack.

The T.Flight HOTAS X is less than £40 and VA is less than a tenner. You really don't need anything better. The unmimickable(?) FA Off pilot Isinona uses the HOTAS X!

With these you won't ever need to use your keyboard. (Unless you are copying from INARA, tbh I even have VA control paste.)

And it really helps muh immurshun!

I don't see your point, I have everything bound to my gamepad so sure I can live without the wands. But being able to use them would make the cockpit more tangible. right now you can just walk into space and continue playing. Using the wands to interact with things that are in a certain location in your ship would make it just a little bit more "real". Anyway, I digress.

Actually the main reason is that in VR all the menu's and other controls work better with the wands and Elite currently forces you to put them aside.

I have a HOTAS and I put it in my cupboard, it's too clumsy and unwieldy to use compared to a gamepad. It's an X55. But you're free to use whatever controls you like.

Also, the keybindings system forces me to choose a pair of controls, I have keyboard bindings and gamepad bindings and I tried binding my X55 and partially succeeded in having an All-in-One profile so I can quickly swap (without having to go to the controls menu) but some buttons are needed on all three devices.

.... anyway I don't understand why people are reacting like it would be bad to have this support? It wouldn't stop you from enjoying your HOTAS, now would it?

Also : Screenshot hotkeys can't be rebound. SteamVR hotkey is on gamepad (at least it used to be but it doesn't work for me anymore) and wand and keyboard, I haven't found it on HOTAS although I could bind it to the keyboard key of course.
