Tough ride in a low intensity conflict zone

Yesterday night I took my fairly pimped Krait Mk2 for a ride: I begun in a medium intensity conflict zone and everything went as planned, so when the battle was over I headed to a nearby Low intensity zone.
Here something weird happened: I started up chewing a Chieftain for more than 15 minutes but once I managed to destroy it I earned a ridiculously low amount of credits. Strange.
Shortly after I got roasted to hell by a Cobra Mk3 in just a couple minutes.
Usually I eat Cobras for breakfast, but not this time.
I am still scratching my head trying to figure it out. It sounds to me as a balancing issue when jumping from a conflict zone to another, anybody here bumped in the same problem?
I'll try to replicate this night but I am a bit concerned losing anohter 4.5Mil on insurance cost.

Are you able to post a link of your Krait build from a site like Coriolis?

How much did you get for killing the chieftain, was it around 50K? Conflict zone rewards are much lower than bounties in haz res sites but you do get the option of massacre missions to make up for it.

One thing to understand are the regular NPC ships in the conflict zones are just the same, whether it's a low, med or high. The difference between CZs is the amount of stuff in the CZ (e.g. mediums and highs need more kills to win, and have things like specops, enemy/friendly captains, capital ships etc).

What usually happens when you're having trouble with, say, a Cobra Mk.3 - it's not the Cobra Mk.3 that's the problem, but that you've flown into an enemy murder ball and you're being focused by half a dozen other ships - but you're a bit target fixated on the Cobra and don't realise what's going on. These murder balls can be incredibly persistent and will follow you around. Flying into a swarm of small ships all equipped with rail guns can make short work of even good shields and hull.

Situational awareness is key (and know where friendly murder balls are - if you are getting, say, focused by specops in a medium, try to draw them into your friendly specops so they start fighting amongst themselves and take the heat off you. In a low CZ, there will be friendly murder balls - clusters of friendly ships - you can fly through it and most of the time the friendly NPCs will help take the heat off you).

If you've got G5 dirty drives on that Krait and an engineered distributor, you're faster than any of the NPCs and you can permaboost. Set FA to off (your speed decays more slowly), 4 pips to shields and boost till you're on the edge of the CZ. Sometimes you can simply draw out just the one ship you're fighting, so you just fight it and are not being set upon by an enemy murder ball.

What astonished me was the extreme toughness of those NPC ships. Second CZ was magnitudes away from the first CZ, and had lower rewards.
I could not replicate yesterday, but I agree I must have fallen into a murder ball without noticing.
@winston thanks for the tip, I'll be back with an engineered distributor ;)
