They are not actually removing the ride, they are just re-skinning it. It is still going to be a drop tower style ride using the same ride mechanism. While it is a classic ride, the theme is not owned by Disney so this change will allow them to get some of their own branding into the park quickly (and probably save some licensing money by not having to pay the rights holders of Twilight Zone). To me this is probably less offensive than the Frozen re-skinning of Maelstrom to a fictional country, but even with that one, I was not overly offended. I am not a purist.
As for Orlando, Universal's license to Marvel characters makes it much more difficult to put a marvel attraction in Orlando. Universal had way more bargaining power back when Marvel licensed out the superheroes in the 90s. While Guardians is not a property that falls under the Universal agreement with Marvel, there are restrictions on using the marvel name and advertising marvel attractions in the Orlando / Florida area that would discourage Disney from doing this in Orlando. That said, once Toy Story land and Star Wars land are done, I could see them refurbing and re-skinning tower of terror and the Aerosmith themed rollercoaster.
Gregorburns1 - Not sure why adding star wars to Hollywood studios is a problem. Everything they removed and closed down in the interim to build that land and the toy story one were filler. What would you prefer to see at the studios over Star Wars? It stopped being an actual studio years ago - no one wants to film there. Disney was actually left with little choice with introducing Star Wars land. It is the only property Disney owns that can rival what Universal has done with Harry Potter. Either add a Star Wars land or watch attendance at Universal continue to rise with little to no response from Disney.
The real problem with Disneyworld are the lines and crowds. Magic Bands / FastPass+ has not helped the wait times at all and in fact, for many rides, waits got worse. I am of the view that Disney should have taken the billions they spent on Magic Bands and FP+ and instead invested it in 10 to 12 new high caliber rides across all the parks, including a star wars section at the studios. What better way to shorten lines than to increase ride capacity...
