Real World Theme Parks Tower of Terror Disneyland california to be removed

I personally don't like it. I feel like they're starting to rip out all the "classic" rides, and replace them with movie characters. I mean, really? Just keep the classic rides that made the parks so good!

They had better not do this to the Florida equivalent. They've already ruined most of that park with Star Wars and if they take the tower from me as well then i'll... I don't know what I'll do but I know it won't be nice.

They are not actually removing the ride, they are just re-skinning it. It is still going to be a drop tower style ride using the same ride mechanism. While it is a classic ride, the theme is not owned by Disney so this change will allow them to get some of their own branding into the park quickly (and probably save some licensing money by not having to pay the rights holders of Twilight Zone). To me this is probably less offensive than the Frozen re-skinning of Maelstrom to a fictional country, but even with that one, I was not overly offended. I am not a purist.

As for Orlando, Universal's license to Marvel characters makes it much more difficult to put a marvel attraction in Orlando. Universal had way more bargaining power back when Marvel licensed out the superheroes in the 90s. While Guardians is not a property that falls under the Universal agreement with Marvel, there are restrictions on using the marvel name and advertising marvel attractions in the Orlando / Florida area that would discourage Disney from doing this in Orlando. That said, once Toy Story land and Star Wars land are done, I could see them refurbing and re-skinning tower of terror and the Aerosmith themed rollercoaster.

Gregorburns1 - Not sure why adding star wars to Hollywood studios is a problem. Everything they removed and closed down in the interim to build that land and the toy story one were filler. What would you prefer to see at the studios over Star Wars? It stopped being an actual studio years ago - no one wants to film there. Disney was actually left with little choice with introducing Star Wars land. It is the only property Disney owns that can rival what Universal has done with Harry Potter. Either add a Star Wars land or watch attendance at Universal continue to rise with little to no response from Disney.

The real problem with Disneyworld are the lines and crowds. Magic Bands / FastPass+ has not helped the wait times at all and in fact, for many rides, waits got worse. I am of the view that Disney should have taken the billions they spent on Magic Bands and FP+ and instead invested it in 10 to 12 new high caliber rides across all the parks, including a star wars section at the studios. What better way to shorten lines than to increase ride capacity...

I have no problem with the new "Star Wars Land" itself, but what I do have a problem with is the fact the whole park now contains reference to Star Wars simply because it is the latest thing Disney have bought. Fair enough, open a Star Wars section of the park much like what Universal have done with Harry Potter but leave it at that. They now have:
  • "Star Wars Fireworks"- which is a pretty good fireworks show (the same one that's been there for years but under different names) with Star Wars music and Star Wars movie projections that have nothing to do with, and don't fit the timing of the fireworks themselves.
  • A Star Wars ending to the Great Movie Ride film - no longer is it a tribute to all the Great Movies, it is a tribute to Star Wars (and a tiny bit of Frozen- that's a whole other story [sulk]) with Star Wars music
  • The sign-up/meet location for the Jedi-Training has moved so that now the kids who are doing it have to walk through the whole park to the stage they perform on making it unavoidable
  • They removed my favourite burger from the menu of the Backlot Express and replaced it with a disgusting-looking Star Wars themed black-bun one.
  • They have Star Wars merchandise now in every shop and restaurant I visited in the park on my latest visit. (With the exception of the three attraction-specific shops in the park that aren't Star Tours)
  • A large number of the staff working throughout the park now no longer have their home town on their name tags, instead they have a fictional Star Wars place.
  • They have replaced the former very-popular meet and greet locations in the old Animation Courtyard with Star Wars meet-and-greets
  • They sell Star Wars merchandise outside the Tower of Terror

So yeah... That's why I don't like it much. I know things have got to stay fresh and all that and I am happy with the new Star-Wars land but they have taken away a lot of what made the Studios what it was. The Backlot Tour was mediocre I know but if that was upgraded to meet the times along with the old motor-show, both of those attractions could help cut the wait times of the rest of the park. Instead we have to wait 5 years for the park to be renamed "Star Wars and a bit of Toy Story Land" while having to queue several hours for the two best rides in WDW (IMO) down Sunset Boulevard which are soon to bite the bullet as well in their current form.

You can give us a "Star Wars Land" if you like, but make it optional please. I call for independence of Sunset Boulevard for the Thrill-Seekers among us!

I'm pretty sad that my favorite ride at DCA is getting a makeover, and to be a movie cash-in to boot. Guardians doesn't even fit in the Hollywood backlot area of the park, and being the tallest structure in the park, it's going to stand out like a sore thumb. So now we will be going down Buena Vista street to ride the lone Marvel attraction.

Disney rant: DCA seems to be losing its identity. They did a great job converting Condor Flats into Grizzly Peak Airfield but if they're modifying/reskinning the Hollywood area of DCA into a mini marvel land, there's one less California thing to the California-themed park.

I hope they don't change this in Orlando and Paris. It's a great ride and the theme is perfect for it.

Pretty upset about this, because it means they're probably planning something similar in Orlando. It's one of my favourite rides and most of this is because of the excellent theming being a perfect companion for the actual ride itself. If Disney keep doing things like this itll spoil it a bit imo[mad]

Really don't like the retheming...I've thought the Twilight Zone theming was perfect and very creative ( the Tokyo-Version is even better[yesnod])...but a GotG theming is just a commercial gimmick for the kids - that's why I prefered Michael Eisner to Bob Iger...Eisner was megalomaniac but he was a guy that prefered creativity (Disneyland Paris - Festival Disney decision) Bob iger is too much the buisness-guy - like you can see in the Disney Parks - all new rides are franchise-rides)...and most of the new disney movies are soulless, calculated mass products.

Dario85, I know that they are re-skinning Space Mountain Mission 2 at Paris in to Hyperspace Mountain in January with the ride re-opening in April/May. It will be sad to see it go as the ride is fantastic as is especially the sound track.

shipbiulder101, That's the thing that's really got a bee in my bonnet. I went to Disneyland Paris when I was young and didn't like roller-coasters so I never rode it. I fell in love with it in subsequent years via the internet but now I'll know that I'll never get to ride it with it's proper theme! The worst part is I just know that they're going to tear down a lot of the original steampunk aesthetic that made it great so that it can fit in with the Star Wars theme. Really I don't know why Disney couldn't have left it since it was completely unique from the other space mountains, which are themed in a way that allows Star Wars.

Same here ...

It's the very first time I do not like the retheming work of the Disney imagineers team [bored]

Well the Twilight tower of terror is already based on a TV show... so they simple re-theme it to a movie (that I personally find boring as heck, but I guess they have to promote their stuff).

On the Space Mountain, turning it into a Star Wars ride was predictable, I only feel sad for the Paris one (tho it was already quite "de-themed" with Mission 2.

But having in mind Disney now owns Lucasarts and Marvel, we'll see more of their stuff coming in the parks.

On the bright side (for me), maybe we'll finally see an Indiana Jones land like it was planned for Euro Disney (nowadays DL Paris).

In any case it's kind of funny to think how Disney parks are turning, having in mind that the original idea was that only one of their lands had Disney stories themed amusement rides (Fantasyland)... Adventureland was supposed to be an animal park (they turned the animals into animatronics to ensure their presence), Frontierland in a national park rides area (canoes, horse ridden carts, shooting gallery, etc.), and Tomorrowland was meant to be like the World Fair (a bit what Epcot is nowadays).

But ... But ... I love the "Jules verne" theme of the Space Moutain Paris

I hope they will not touch it [sad]

The things that are still Jules Verne are not being replaced. The inside was already a trainwreck since Mission 2, and with StarWars we're getting music that is closer to the original De la Terre a la Lune then the current music in Mission 2. :)

Yeah, it's hard to screw the attraction more after what they did with Mission 2.

I still dream for a return to the Tony Baxter's original ideas for Discoveryland (including more Jules Verne themed rides). After all, even Walt Disney himself planed many for the original Disneyland (Anaheim).
