Towing & Recovery

Hi Cmdr's,

As I have recently been running out of fuel a lot and getting severely damaged when scooping, an idea popped into my head (as they often do), I thought, it would be great if there was some kind of towing/ship recovery available instead of just self destructing and costing a fortune on insurance.

It could be run as another Job route along side mining, bounty hunting and trading. Cmdr's could pay say half the price of the insurance premium or Cmdr's could set a price to put out a call to be towed/recovered by other Cmdr's. I think it would be great starting off your own towing/recovery business, It would be fun while towing getting interdicted and trying to fight off pirates while having some useless hunk of metal being pulled behind.

If the Cmdr being towed had turret weapons it would be even better as then they could help fend off the pirates/bounty hunters/griefers. It would also give a nice warm feeling inside knowing that we had been to someone's rescue in there time off need. Most of all, I wouldn't have to keep paying hefty insurance payments.

but then I suppose, I should just be more careful keeping an eye on my fuel and heat levels while scooping ;)

More than likely someone has suggested this already, but like I said, the idea just popped into my head as I just lost another ship! (I'm just as bad with my car and the fuel too )

If you stop when fuel scooping, it's rather easy to find a spot where the ships temp never goes above 98%. Just remember the fuel scoop rate it gives at this distance, and you can always stop for scooping at this distance. Works with most, if not all, scoopable stars.

For example, my Viper used to have a cheap scoop, and yet I noticed I can always come to a halt when the scoop rate was about 12/s. I'd just check the area for any ships, and just wait for the scooping to be completed.

Traveled over 6,500ly to a few nearly nebulae and didn't run out of fuel once. No towing service needed, just better understanding on fuel scooping. Besides, with the current comms system in place, how are you going to go about contacting your knight in fading armour plates ? Sending a signal out would be like drawing sharks to blood. Even I'd be tempted to take advantage of this situation and either pirate you or offer you protection against pirates while you waited on your back street garage to turn up.

Also, if you're exploring, there's little need for cargo space. Use the largest internal compartment for a high-class fuel scoop, this wil work wonders with the time it takes for you to fill your fuel tank. For instance, my class 5B fuel scoop in my Asp fills the tank in just over one minute, from empty.

There's some sort of recovery concept coming after the 1.2 patch, a dev post referenced it a bit ago.

This ^^

They haven't given much in the way of details, but it is something they're looking at. One of the ideas being bounced around was some sort of distress call mechanic, but no info yet on how that would work.

I'd be interested to see how that would work, and the range. If you're in occupied space then yes, perfect mechanic for both asking for help and asking for trouble. If you're out exploring in the middle of nowhere and a ship just pops across then that completely kills immersion. Would need careful design, something which Frontier don't seem to have a history of right now. For example, is this for other players to help you or a spawned NPC to come along ? Or does this require you to sit and wait with a countdown then you 'magically' reappear in a station (much like the traveling Space Station...it's just a server move, not actually traveling itself.)

If you look on Nutters exploration guide theres a useful fuel scooping tutorial which was a revelation to me. Now its a doddle. I used to just loop the star, now I just zoom in 100% till I hit 98% heat and slam the brakes on. Fills up in no time and I can be checking my nav panel whilst it does so.

Will give that a shot as im loosing too many credits :)

Two things....

Get a better scoop. The better the scoop the more effective it is at scooping... which means you get to be further from the sun for the same fuel flow..... which means less heat. There is a direct relation between fuel rate and heat for each scoop. I am running a 2A on my cobra and I find that a 40/sec flow runs me about 96% heat. With my old 2E it was around a 25/sec. I normally aim at the cloud ring around the sun... (the haze glowing numbus) when the flow rate gets to 35 I slow down then adjust from there.

"Hello this is the Galactic RAC how may we help"
"I have run out of fuel and need a tow"
"Can I have your membership number Sir"
"12239871"
"I am sorry Sir that account is a basic account and does not cover running our of fuel. You are only covered for third party damage"
"We can upgrade your membership using and emergency fee of 10,000,000 credits.."
"Okay, transferring funds"
"Thankyou Sir. We have noted your system and will be there in 6 hours 45 minutes. Please wait outside the vehicle".

Just made me chuckle :) as that's along the lines of what I was thinking when I had the idea. Could even go all out an turn into a scrap man buying non-runners an such ;)

Nice thought OP. I'd like to think that anything that could have evolved in this Galaxy of ours will have evolved...and "tow trucks" will have been needed, and someone will have provided them. Good work.

I would love to see this service offered.

Yes, as a responsible pilot I should make sure I don't run out of fuel but, as we know, the gene pool is filled with those who don't plan ahead.

Flying happy

Jon
