Tractor beam

If they included a tractor beam it could be used for crime and punishment instead of the just the death penalty.

It would also be of use to pirates and other gameplay activities.

I would expect that whilst in use all other weapons would be disabled (perhaps the tractor beam would also act like a shield so that a wingman couldn't just destroy a stopped ship) and that there would be a mini game like the interdiction one to escape the tractor beam.

So if you aren't considered to be a massive criminal the police can tractor you back to a station to pay the fine or do some hard labour. Perhaps you'll be required to pay your fine off through CQC games before you can get your ship back. CQC was intended as a punishment right?

anyway a thought for something less than destruction in crime and punishment plus additional game play options.

AFAIR tractor beams have been rejected as not part of the Elite universe (at least as far as human knowledge goes...).

I wouldn't rule out grappling hooks though - very pirate oriented...

Perhaps limpets with computer hacking or truster disabling features then?

Or a beam that effects the computer systems and reroutes power from engines to shields?

Elite typically takes the low-tech approach - no artificial gravity (stations have to spin and the Majestic uses a centrifuge to simulate gravity), no teleporters, limpet drones instead of tractor beams. So I'd wager they considered tractor beams and rejected them as they don't really fit the style of the universe they're building. Maybe aliens will have them, though..

Anyhow; the method of how it is done is not important. the idea is to be able to disable a ship without damaging it and tow it back to a station so fines have to be paid if caught. Rather than the only response being destroy the ship and all occupants.

There are also additional game play possibilities with the mechanic i.e. piracy

if aliens have better technology, humans will take that technology, study it, rebuild it (maybe even better/more efficient after some tries) and use it (against the aliens). so it shouldn't be long after the aliens arive that we could buy them.

Do not forget that aliens have not only better technology but also better adaptability.
Rather, it should be expected, that THEY will be able to adapt OUR technology. :D

well i can say I didn't expect this discussion.

It doesn't matter how it is done.

Just have a mechanic that allows for ship to be disabled (without being destroyed) so it can be towed back to a station for punishment.
