I will fiers abdmit that I am new but doe anyone know if there are any pland for a Tractor beam on the cargo scoop it would make mining so muche easer I am lovin the gaame but I am finding the mining tutorial really hard (i gave up on the advanced combat tutoril I know how to do it but my god that taget is tougth) so is there anychance of a tractor beam?

Hi and Welcome,

We did ask for a tractorbeam many years ago, it was rejected due to realism, so after a long wait we got Limpets instead. :)

Never heard of any plans for implementing tractor beam but as mentioned you can lunch small robots that will collect mined chunks for you.

FD laid down some ground rules for the physics of the Elite Dangerous universe way back in the day. They include:

- No tractor beams.
- No AI robots.
- No artificial gravity.
- No "Star Trek style" teleportation.

So no, sorry, tractor beams have been officially ruled out.

Mining without limpets is a real nightmare!

Providing you have a spare slot in your ship you can install a Collector Limpet controller and then fill up your cargo space with limpets.

Whilst mining you "fire" limpet out, making sure you don't target any fragments that are mined and floating about, it will then start collecting those and bringing them back to your cargo scoop.

They do have a lifetime, so will expire/explode after a while, but then you can sit back, manage your refinery bins and await the scan of a nearby pirate!

Fly safe CMDR!

Welcome to the forum and yes don't be afraid to ask. :)

We used to have tractor beams. This was my ship in FFE:

Hello and welcome, fellow mining enthusiast.

Every now and then in one of the forum's mining threads (which are legion - should keep you occupied for a while!) someone suggests different ways to collect fragments, and some sort of tractor beam would be good, but - as has been mentioned - not "lore" (even though we've got fancy force-field technology): Even if we DID have tractor beams, we'd need them fitted to cargo scoops (located under the ship) and there's no mechanic for that either (and no dedicated mining ships either, but that's a whole other can of worms!)

Limpets are a good compromise, but I don't think you can use them in the tutorial simulator - the idea, I assume, is to get you used to manual scooping (a very useful skill).

seriously 1000 years in the future and ya have to scoop stuff with a cargo bay door open , what aboput space scrap from blown up ships do limpets gather that aslo?

Yes , a note of warning though DO NOT target a specific commodity when firing off limpets as it will only collect that 1 targetted and then the limpet will expire , instead you should not have any targets selected and fire off the limpets , they will then happily collect till the end of their lifecycle (time depends on the collector controller used).
