Trade data?

When looking at systems in the galaxy map, you often see unmapped systems, mapped systems, etc. When you highlight a system, you are sometimes given the option of buying info about the highlighted system. Sometimes it says you can buy 'trade info' or something along that lines. Having bought the trade data once before and seen no appreciable info appear anywhere, what does this actually do?
