Trade prices in the commodities market

Am I doing something wrong here? I usually pick up a mission or two to go somewhere, then go to the commodities market, put in my destination and load up on the items with the best profit at my destination, then when I get there I find I'm actually making a loss. what's the deal?

Faction States will affect the profits of Trade routes quite a bit.
When both Systems carry specific Faction States, profits can turn negative even for otherwise standard good-profit trades.

Make sure you're calculating with the right origin and destination.

I buy, fly, sell all within 10-20 minutes, does it change that quickly, or is the data just never that current?

I'm using the figures in the commodities market itself, so I just set the destination, is there a setting for origin that I have missed?

Depends on which you're using but you can plan ahead one or more jumps.
Second row, single or multi hop route

Or this for just a to b
.

Sorry, I meant I'm just using the in-game tool, I have all those sites bookmarked but I only really use them when I need to find which stations are selling a commodity I need.

My solution was buying a cheap monitor and have Inara open while playing. It basically extends your UI.

In game market prices on "trade data system" are NOT updated live every minute...
There is a time limit on when data is updated for EVERY known market in the galaxy... The BGS is changing prices regularly... "Trade data" system on galaxy map is independant from actual live market data, market data is not sent every min there is a restriction put in place on the updates in game...

Once you enter the instance with a market at the station the sever loads what the prices will then be for that market for that location...
The galaxy map "trade data system" is estimated/last known price at last update of that system... its not the instant this millisecond price...

This can happen when your Trade data isn't current (24hrs) or - AFAIK - at the start of a new daily BGS cycle. I've seen occasions where current Trade Data existed (traded well within 24hrs) but the Commodity Market didn't display the actual current Data after a new BGS cycle on the target System.
That incurred losses on an otherwise >500Cr/ton trade to my surprise more than once.

Only after docking (Trade data refreshed), returning and rechecking the Commodity Market, the projected Trade loss was correctly indicated in the market.

So in regard to BGS states, it seems it can display false (obsolete - last BGS State) Data from the target System unless new data can be purchased (impossible if data is less than 24hrs old) or physically docking at the Destination.

I believe that might be connected to a very old issue, where certain Commodities even went out of Supply due to a new Faction State going active but the Trade Data display didn't reflect that change at all - making the old Galaxy Map Trade Data at that time highly unreliable as well in regard to Commodities available vs. unavailable.

Overall though, luckily such occurrences are fairly rare and are cleared up in the market display no later than after a single bad trade at the destination.
