Here's a spreadsheet I use to find profitable trade routes. No idea if its useful to other people but feel free to take a copy and use it if you want:

I just look for gold priced at 8700 and sell where it's 10300 ish with some juicy missions thrown in

Usually prog cells or advanced cats make circa 800cr /ton on the return trip

if not the above then I'm rare trading on a multi stop route

800 is not bad. With the spreadsheet I was able to push it to 1100 per trip. Turns out that silver (from the right stations) is often more profitable than gold. Tobacco is a good one to look out for in Alliance stations. Consumer tech is also often the best choice.
