Trader ships that can survive Open

I never tried multiple chaff, but IIRC you can mount multiple chaff but one will be dropped at a time.
Yep, with dual chaff, you drop one and do not need to wait the reload time to complete to launch another one.
I now replace one shield booster by an additional chaff, and equip a bigger shield :)
 
I fly a Clipper with 3 x A-rated shield boosters (that add 60pct shield strength) to a 4A shield and 232 cargo space. Works just fine for me in Open. I don't actively seek out conflict, but I have enough shield strength to withstand a bit of pew pew and protect the hull/cargo.

Well, multiple chaff launchers are for fighters.
I take it you trade with your Clipper and your main concern is to escape pirates/psychos after an interdiction. I would then go for A rank thruster, drop a single chaff while your opponent is close, boosts away and, if required, enable silent running if your shield happen to drop. but you may already know/do that, right? :)

EDIT: indeed, forgot that this thread is about trading ships. We should not have brought chaff in the story.

Never died to player interdiction even with a Wing of 3 FDL's coming at me (lost 10% hull but still pretty solid at 90%).

Boost, flight assist off, throw pips into shield and charge FSD. If shields look to be taking too much damage fire constant chaff and use some side-side and up/down thrust. Keep on boosting till clear of masslock and FSD charges or jump to another system.

Sure the initial cost is high at 67mil but for a pretty much invincible trader with 176T of cargo it really isn't bad. 16.5LY jump range with a good fuel scoop so can still travel pretty well, not the best for trading rares but pretty good as a mid-level trader before the Python.
(Weapons only there to disguise not to fight with).
 
if you need weapons to survive in open play while trading then you're doing it wrong.

stay off heavily trafficked paths
boost boost fsd whenever interdicted.

You only need shields to handle accidental station bumps.
The only real threat to a trader's ship is falling asleep or getting distracted during a jump.
There is literally 0 need (the way the game currently operates) to reduce risk to traders. By better armed ships or otherwise.
 
Do you mean:
#A To equip 4 chaff launchers but keep only on powered on at a time? Then, fire a chaff, power down the chaff launcher and power on the next one which should be ready to fire, avoiding the realod time of the previous one?
#B That if the 4 chaff launchers are powered on, they would only fire one at a time, subsequently?

I have never tried any of these since #A sounds like a hassle and a risk to do mistakes during a battle and for #B, i read that all chaffs fire in the meantime, giving no advantage.

No, just lower shields and no shield boosters, two fixed beams and 4 stacked chaff - no reload time between activating them and no switching them off. I was joking mostly, but an opposing vulture with 2 gimbled pulse and strong shields might fall victim to this, along with a clipper with gimbled...just depends on the pilot really...I'm just starting to find out what works and doesn't in pvp situations and am often surprised. The other thing I'm often surprised by is how what's on paper about ships isn't always how they are in the game...I thought the clipper with A7 shields and A0 boosters, lots of shield cells would provide a mighty ship, but I think the ASP and Dropship, to name a couple are tougher...anyway...can't even rmember what this thread was about now...and tbh, I'm going to have to quite the game for a few months...sob sob sob...addicted...sob

Have you tried to equip a 3A shield instead of 6A, and a class 2 shield cell bank (to be popped continuously as soon as you take some shots)? You would then have 52T cargo extra and with the speed of the Clipper, that should work.
