trading for Asp - roughly how much required to be viable

Hey guys just a ballpark question if you don't mind.

I'm currently in a T6 100 tons of space class A hyperdrive B thrusters and pretty much D everything else.

I intend once I have the cash to move into an Asp then slowly upgrade her to whatever takes my fancy then, however I fell foul with Ermintrude that I got the shell but couldn't really go far til I'd got the essentials.

Given that I will be trading in Ermintrude how much would you recommend in the kitty to upgrade to useful - keep insurance - be able to buy cargo?

I was thinking 5-6 mill but am I a long way off?

(I don't need class a everything but a reasonable jump distance and cargo hold so I can then upgrade as and when)

20 million, to upgrade FSD to A-class, run class 3 shields and fill the cargo hold, with an insurance float. You will be better off in type 6 until you have 20 million or so.

I would suggest roughly 14 mil in total including assets and cash.
.
6 mil to buy the Asp and the rest to upgrade the internals as needed.

If you a continuing to trade the main benefit of asp is the extended range. Running costs are far higher than t6. Go for the t7 for trade runs. Double the cargo capacity. Would need 25 mil or so to buy and kit out. A fsd is 5 million

My Asp cost about 12 million to upgrade to a survivable state...

Mind you, it's more of a battle cruiser now than a trader (a whole 16 tons cargo space!)

What I'd point out is that repair costs are prohibitive, so when you have one, don't get it scratched :)

I'm not sure what I'm going to do... I just want the options :) I don't like the T6 much but understand its "role" - I also want to try as many ships as possible due to interest :)

10m cr will get you safely trading in your new Asp, you can upgrade it further with more trade runs. Compared to the T6 it feels like a bit of a beast, so just go easy in it for the first few runs. I smashed mine into an outpost coming in too fast on my maiden voyage :)

I still disagree with those saying skip the Asp for trading. It's much, much, much, much, much, much (much [much {much}]) more pleasant to fly than either the T6 or T7 and can carry more stuff than the former.

It takes a lot of money before the T7 is anything other than a giant pain to fly. Earning that money in an Asp will be far more enjoyable than in a T6.

Did exactly that last weekend. Wanted to go from a T6 to a 'trader' Asp.

I knew I couldn't afford the full explorer or even military kit from the start. But the Asp can haul more cargo, defend itself better, and is certainly a lot nicer to fly.
So if I want to keep trading to upgrade to explorer or military I might as well do it in the Asp (also other players probably will not interdict an Asp as much as a T6. Not that I have ever been interdicted by a player out on the fringes, but it's something to think about).
Traded in the T6 for 2.2m and had a little under 8m in the bank.

Fitted a smaller shield and as much cargo as I could (116tons) and some prefunctory weapons. Left me roughly 1.5m for insurance (450k) and some cargo. Been pretty happy with the trade (it was worth it alone for the engine sound :D ).

Why would you skip the Asp?
Exactly. With the Asp you can at least spice up the trade runs with the occasional bounty hunting. That's something hard to do in a T6 (though I'm sure it would be an exhilirating experience...if somewhat brief)
In an Asp you're also not limited to boost/boost/FSD if interdicted. You can kick some backside if you feel like it.

Think I spent about 14m on mine with upgrades to power, fsd, shield and c class on other stuff. Rebuy is around 650k and w+t tolerable.
So you need for that 16.6m if you want to be able to take a full load of gold and have rebuy money plus a little free cash.
Flies much better than the t6 and sounds better than the cobra, though I slightly miss the increased manoeuvrability of the cobra I don't miss it enough to switch back, and I certainly don't miss the vulnerability of the t6.
I do think that the 5b shield goes down more easily than the 4a used to on my cobra, which is a tad annoying/unexpected. Although it might just be that I'm seeing tougher opponents lately.
Only downside is the increased repair cost really, you really feel it if something bites the hull. Failed interdiction mini game against an NPC sidewinder cost me the 4.5k bounty I got for destroying him (which took all of 3 seconds, so that was doubly annoying, should have just submitted.)

Contrary to what people claim here, 8 million buys you an Asp with 1 rebuy and another 1.2 million will let you load it up with gold.

9.2 million and you can get an Asp trader.

Another 1.5 million for the B-FSD and you'll jump further than a type 6, too.

What s/he said. :)

I had a T-6 (still have it actually) and used it until I could get an ASP. Upgraded the ASP bay cargo pods (and shields, of course) and took off trading. As I made more runs I upgraded weapons and internals. 112 cargo today which is slightly over the T-6 but I can jump a lot farther and get some rich creamy cargo loads that were out of reach for the T-6.

I got the ASP as I plan on exploring some day. You can skip it as Clawhammer says. However, the ASP has teeth if you are interdicted and the bonus bounty money I make from having six weapons makes my day. :)
