Newcomer / Intro trading routes

I dont like the idea of using 3rd party websites or software to calculate my routes , is there an way of discovering trade routes ingame or is it just trial and error?

Yes, we sort of. In the galaxy map you can view the direction of flow of goods. I forget what panel it is under but it's the below the section that lets you change how to view the stars (map or realistic). Just remember that it doesn't show profit just volume. But use the simple rules of buy low (or when a station has MED/High supply) and sell high (when station has MED/HIGH demand). Lastly in the commodities screen it will tell you where the station export or imports as part of the item description. Eventually you will get to know an are of space and their supply chain.

Try commanders log. Its a tool that helps identify trade routes but only uses data you enter. Its simply an automated way of keeping notes on trade prices. It involves some effort to enter the prices but you at least know its all your own work.

You can find a good trade route by using simply your logical thought.

The higher the galactical average of a good, the higher the possible profit margin.
Metals have a very high galactical average.
Metals are sold mainly by extraction economies.

The higher the population, the higher the supply. (and the demand)
So I seek for a high populated extraction system.

I have not found a high populated extraction system in my vicinity.
But I have found a high populated agriculture system with extraction as second economy.

The result : A fantastic trade route with a profit 1,652 cr/t.

Not the best trade route of the galaxy and all logic has some mistakes.
But it proves that there is no 3rd party programs needed.

And there are a few such logics in the game.
