Traffic Separation Scheme

Is there a Traffic Separation Scheme in place? By that I mean "Rules of the Road" to prevent collisions. On the road you drive on the left. It seems that getting in out of Space Stations can be a squeeze. I have noticed there are Port (Red) and Starboard (Green) lights in use at the entrances just like at sea here on Earth but with no up and down these don't mean much.

What is the protocol? If there isn't one shouldn't we invent one?

I go through the green side, but as you go through your ship gets pushed towatds the centre unless you counter with thrusters.

It's not Port and Starboard like in maritime navigation. From the inside of the station, if you look out of the exit port you can see the opposite coloured lights on the outside face. so ships exiting on the green side will be on the same side as the red light from the outside.

the next lad that takes his Type 9 into the port by sticking to the green side only, i'll buy a pint o' beer :p

At sea, the rules are there to avoid collision, you can be any where in the channel but when there is a chance of hitting someone you have set of rules to follow which result in the collision being avoided. So, when you're head on to someone, you both change course in opposite directions. If you both go the same way you will collide.

Like at sea, large ships get special rights.

That actually works if were sticking to the Green side.

Docking computer takes it down the middle (cue the Carry On jokes), I personally try and take the green side, though I'm more interested in working out where the rest of the traffic is and focus on dodging that rather than sticking to a particular set of guidelines (let's be honest, they're not rules).

On the way out, gear up, line up, check there's nothing in the way, full power and double boost baby!!!

Lol, Yes guidelines is what I meant. So there is a consensus for Green it seems.

These little things all add up to make it more real.

I do it whilst barrel rolling. Sometimes. I've yet to lose a ship.

Really there should be an exit at the other side of the station. I get you want docking to be exciting, but ......

Simple rule: Type 9 goes first whenever and wherever she feels like it. Everyone else squeezes by as possible.

They could make it even more realistic by having a couple of pensioners flying around in an olive green sidewinder at 5 km/h with the windscreen wipers going full pelt (both wearing plastic rainhoods) :)

it's the forcefield centring slow ships that pushes them in the middle - if you increase your speed enough depending on your current mass you'll clear on through on the same side your enter the port.

just one other question on this, where y'all flying that this actually becomes an issue, player wise? NPC's aim for the middle, same as that Hal 9000 cousin, the docking computer does and i generally have not run into other commanders often enough to really have to worry about it :)
