Transition from 1080p 24 inch monitor to Oculus Rift CV1 resolution.

Can someone tell me how big of an impact to the eyes this transition is? I am reluctant to buy it because I am not sure if I am going to like the change if it's a huge difference.

My experience of the Oculus headsets, clarity wise:
  • Rift CV1 - like sitting just a bit too close to a 480 resolution CRT TV
  • Rift S - like an early generation 720p LCD
  • Quest 2 - on a par with my 1080p monitor
I will say though, I’d take a Rift CV1 over the flatscreen game without hesitation - it transformed the game for me 😁 If you’ve got the graphical power to increase the SuperSampling or HMD Quality settings, it massively helps the Rift CV1. At the time I had that HMD I was using a GTX 1060 6GB and couldn’t increase those settings comfortably, so I had to get used to slightly blurry text on the HUD.

I wouldn't get a low res VR headset unless you were getting it for basically free. Plus for the longest time the oculus was tied to facebook.

save up, get something new.. there have been vast improvements in lens and display quality since those "first" gen headsets ...you're gonna end up regretting spending whatever you spend on the CV1 once you get a taste of VR due to all of the compromises you'll be making with it (low res, god rays, etc).

either way, I'd get something from htc over oculus just to avoid any connection to facebook but that's just me.

Just on the Facebook thing - it was announced at the recent expo that the mandatory FB account is being dropped as from next year, and anyone who wants to unlink their account will be able to do so. Although exact details weren’t given, it sounds like they’re going back to something like the original Oculus account (though with the Meta rebranding, no doubt).

It's a huge difference between a CV1 and, let's say, HP Reverb gen1.

On the rift, I did struggle to read the finer print on the in-cockpit messages - say the distance readout to the target (comms panel was just so/so). The Reverb lets me read the fine print on the cockpit decals without any problems. But then again, the Rift ran fine with a GTX 960, the Reverb is really stressing a GTX 1080ti.

No matter what, though - don't start going down that rabbit hole unless you got a couple of spare grandmothers or kidneys for sale ;).

i use my Oculus rift S and i am running almost everything in high rez dont see any difference myself but thats just me

I tried a CV1 for a few weeks. I didn't like it at all. Getting it set up and optimised took a lot of work. I got a wow moment when I first tried it, but that soon wore off when all the drawbacks and limitations wore me down. I eventually gave it away and switched to a 4k monitor, which I've used since and think is a much better solution. I've now got an HP Reverb, which I bought in anticipation of the game getting properly sorted for VR with the Odyssey update, but that only seemed to make things worse, so I've hardly used it.

I used to have a CV1 and a 1060 3GB. I've had some astonishing experiences in VR in ED using that combo. These days I have a Reverb G2 and a RTX 3070. The so-called "screen door effect" is gone, and it's a lot sharper, but the basic difference between pancake mode and VR is obvious even with a "cheap" VR headset like the CV1. That "difference" is like night and day. I love playing ED in VR, but I wouldn't even bother in pancake mode. I know "immersion" is ridiculed (mostly by pancake players), but to me, that's what it's all about. I like flying spaceships in VR, and the first time I fuel scooped in VR, it literally felt like my eyebrows were melting :)

no kidneys willing to sell or grandmothers left,
is there any option in that sales market for mothers in law?
if so please pm me the dark web link obviously ;)
otherwise ill just stick to 4k and track ir methinks as I like to drink, Scoobie size snack, smoke and watch tv whilst playing and not be tethered in any way (this dog don't like leads) whatsoever whilst being able too look around in and out of game simultaneously which you can still do almost with a hmd but I wouldn't recommend it if that's how you like to roll...…………….
talking of leads
oddly I noticed a guy walking a very clean white persian cat the other night which looked at me as if it was extremely annoyed by this restriction and I wouldn't blame him if he s:poop:at in his owners headphone's whilst he slept.
most pets need to freeroam outside at least once a day for there mental well being and you can consider yourself cruel not to allow this imo

what clean and white or annoyed?
I have seen one splashed by a car so yes and no in that instance
but if your asking weather I can tell a resonably contented cat from an annoyed one that depends on its posture and expression methinks.
on a side note I used telepathic powers of suggestion on said moggy regarding the headphones but that's
a pleasant fiction to most humans :alien:

trusted sniff with our lives but that's another story

I went and bought a new one for a cheap price and I can say that I regretted it at the start because of the muddiness and low resolution at great distances. But after two hours of gameplay, it seems that my eyes somehow got used to it and I started seeing everything better. The sense of scale and the feeling of it all is amazing. It slows down the game greatly, and makes you appreciate every detail of it and the work that went into it. It tricks the brain to the point where you can smell all that burning metal. I mean just driving SRV at low speed on a planet and avoiding rocks, while looking at the wheels rolling, is one of a kind feeling. After all that I only wished that the resolution on my VR was double of its native and everything would be perfect. But all in all, not a bad deal.

The immersion of virtually being in a pilots seat created by having 3d view and 360 look around rather than looking at a small screen rendering the ships dashboard at arms length totally makes it worth the small sacrifice in visual acuity IMHO going from screen to VR. Sure, theres some ghings that will be better on screen than VR, like some text is a bit blurry, so you lean in to make it more legible, though in a CV1 sniping with rails it a challenge, however, the CV1 is a good gateway to VR, some folk find it nauseates them with "sim-sickness" others find the headsets claustrophobic, etc, so getting a CV1 lets you try it out cheap, and you won't lose much money jogging on the headset if it isn't for you.

The CV1 is the easiest headset in the world to set up, but for similar money you can get much better headsets from the Windows Mixed Reality offerings, these are higher resolution, but require a bit if a faff to set up, which I'll explain. Hook in a WMR headset to windows 10, it downloads the WMR home thingy automatically, you then install steam VR through Steam, and WMR for Steam VR plug in, then install Elite through Steam, and launch in Steam VR mode. it's bit of a kerfuffle, but PM me if you need advice or hit the VR sub forum. I'd recommend you try some of the WMR headsets from somewhere that deals in used tech but accepts returns like CEX in the UK. The reson for that recommendation is so you can try one and say VR is for you but you found the speakers lacking, you could look for one with better speakers or a headphone jack, or if you found the headset uncomfortable, you could try one with a different design of mounting.
