"Transmission not sent; no valid communication target." :-(

Is there any way to reply to a message from non-friend player who left the system?

Been docked, but AFK for some time and one Cmdr sent me a few direct messages I'm sorry I didn't reply.
"Transmission not sent; no valid communication target."
From main game menu I can find the player and see that he's "active" (Mobius server), but only option is to send him friend request, while I only need to send a message.

Any advice how to handle such situations?
Tnx

Huh, I kind of wanted to avoid this befriend&dump situation.

Don't think about friending/unfriending like it has anything to do with actual friendship and you'll have no problems with using above advice. It's a tool.

Many Cmdrs send friend requests to people they feel they might like being instanced with in Open - as opposed to griefers and gankers. Having extensive list of frineds you know are normal players and blocking griefers might f.ex make your CG experience a bit different than usual, which is what some people aim for.
Speaking of gankers -some will send you friend request after attacking you, which is their way of saying they will not attack you again, since you'll be on their friend's list.

What I'm trying to say - sometimes people treat this function too seriously. I don't think it requires any actual commitment on your part ;)
Friend, unfriend, don't think too much about it.

The problem lies with no explanation for the friend request. The option to attach a reason for it might help.

I just act as thought they are all sperg randos, griefers, or 'friendly people' who tell griefers where to hunt you. Otherwise I feel it's not worth it to risk a rando when I can find a player group with a long history of keeping an eye on others around them and avoid it almost completely.

Of course, if we just chatted, I could trust them for a short bit no prob, but I don't wanna deal with "hey wanna stay friends" at any point with randos, and I don't know how people take that sort of rejection and can't judge what doing it consistently does to my image.

Ah, well check his Cmdr name on Inara...

Tried that, found him, but his Inara page has just default info. Sent message, still "unread".
Found him on the list of recently accepted to Mobius, but he's not a registered user on their forum.
The name doesn't appear anywhere here on this forum.

... And that led me to ask for help and advice, because I'm intrigued by impossibility to easily contact someone who's offline, without having to play a detective on the internet.

As the others said, just send him a friend request. Remember that not everyone wants to receive messages from other players. The friend system protects people from abuse, otherwise a group of people could flood your inbox with nonsense. It's the internet and some people will always use every possible way to annoy others.

Also : if it was just someone saying 'Hi' and you missed them - move on. I'm sure we've all sent cheery messages and been ignored - no biggie, we know a lot of people aren't paying attention to the chat screen :D
