Lets make it real ?
.
If you can travel 30LY in 0 seconds, then you can take a transport from A to B 300 LY in the same time, except for waiting to take off, SC, and landing of course.
.
I would suggest a simple two tier Transport service, region and local. You buy a ticket from A to B.
VERY IMPORTANT: destinations are only valid if you have a ship there. Avoids exploring the galaxy without a ship so you actually have to have been there.
.
All local starports have a transport every 5 minutes.
All regional starports have a transport every 15 minutes.
.
You must leave your ship. If you are in your ship when the transport leaves, ticket null and void, what a waste of credits.
If you are not in your ship, you can only rejoin a ship in a port where your transport has dumped you, even if this is in a starport "hop", however your ticket is now null and void as it was only valid on the next transport.
.
So:
- If A and B are in the same region, whether local or regional, 1 journey, every 5 mins
- If A and B are regional starports in different regions, 1 journey, every 15 mins
- If one is a regional starport and the other is a local starport but in different regions, 2 journeys, one is every 15 minutes and the other is every 5 minutes.
- Otherwise if both are local starports in diferent regions, then 3 journeys, every 5 minutes, every 15, and finally every 5 minutes.
.
If each journey takes about 3 minutes to watch the takeoff, hyperspace, supercruise and landing, your journey (including waiting times) would take between 3 and 34 minutes. However it would vary mostly due to the supercruising time.
.
Make all that with a nice viewscreen instead of a cockpit of a real NPC ship travelling, meaning each trip takes the real time. Make it an attackable target. One that can deploy escort fighters too
.
If blown up and you were on it, you have your own personal safety guaranteed like in any ship, but back to the port where it left from ready to jump on the next (available) transport. I guess the Inter-Region transports make a juicy target then, so give the possibility to check the passenger list at the terminal
Get to the destination before they do, and interdict them with a group effort to take out the transport and the escorts, expect a slightly heavy bounty though.
.
Add in rarish random accidents, AI Interdictions, shootouts, even being blown up, adds some Galnet news too
"4 Commanders were on board as the LHS 3447-Lave was attacked by pirates...".
.
If you want a Transport service for ships, it could be a later thought, I for one would prefer just a transport service for the public (there are billions remember), NPCs, and pilots of course
