Travel to other galaxies.

In past Elite games I understood that there was more than one galaxy,
and you can travel to other galaxies besides our milky way galaxy.

Will this be implemented in this game too?
I know that the galaxy we have now is
already huge. But extragalactic sounds
awesome beyond interstellar.

Just curious. :)

Nope sorry, not at the moment and no plans for that.

We're stuck with 400 billion stars in our own galaxy.
Should be enough for a while if you do the math.

You know that to visit all systems by one player is practically impossible? That to get to the edge of galaxy you will need to travel months non-stop even with hyperjump? :)

Lol true, I just like the thought of galactic travel. Imagine what there would be innexample the andromeda galaxy. Any way I'm happy with the scope and what they will add for now.

Not necessarily. In Elite 2 the maximum jump range with best jump engines was about 80, as far as i remember. Technology has improved and because it's easier to do the math: lets calculate with a maximum jump range of about 100 Ly. And lets assume that your very big cargo hold is filled with fuel to allow 10 jumps without stopping for fuel.

The Milky Way Galaxy has a diameter of about 120.000 Light Years.

Every tenth jump you have to get to a system with a fuel source. Either a station or a way to collect it yourself.

10 Jumps * 60 Seconds per Jump(to allow you a short scan and some sightseeing) = 10 Minutes for 1000 Light Years.

Then you have to stop and gather some fuel. This will take about 10 Minutes again.

Now and then you will get attacked or have problems with finding fuel. So another 10 Miunutes.

Lets say 30 Minutes for 1000 LY. Including the knowledge that there arent always stars on the route where you need them for a perfect jump.

30 * 120 = 3600 Minutes or 60 hours to get from one side of the galaxy to the other side.

Not sure if im right with my assumption that you can make 10 Jumps with a big cargo hold. But you can do the math. If you can only do 5 jumps its 120 hours. 1 Jump = 600 hours.

Yeah the fuel works a little differently.

And while all the games are connected they're connected in the same way that seasons of Red Dwarf are...

400 billion systems in Elite.

Let's say that you don't even travel, you just go to stars by clicking them in the galaxy-map. 5 seconds per system seems reasonable.

Just clicking on a completely new star-system every 5 seconds would take (5 x 400,000,000,000) 2 trillion seconds (2,000,000,000,000). Let's type "2 trillion seconds into years" into Google.

Hmm... it would take you over 63,000 YEARS just to click on a new star-system every 5 seconds, 24 hours a day.

That sounds practically impossible to visit to me. :p

That was the first Elite I believe (Frontier had one galaxy of that I am sure because I played that game extensively). But I also understood each galaxy, of which there were 8, had far less stars: 256 to be precise. And every star had only one planet with a space station.

So as you can see we are far (a few billion times) better off with the current situation :).
And the detail of every star system has improved a million times too.

That is truly immense.

+rep for you!

The original Elite was not set in our Milky Way galaxy but in 8 galaxies of 256 systems each. Not at all a realistic setting. FE2 then was set in a scaled down approximation of our real galaxy. Not sure how many stars were there but already more than enough and since then intergalactic travel was not implemented nor necessary.
Now with a truly realistic model with 400.000.000.000 stars David's great grand children might think about implementing a payed for expansion for visiting the Magellanic clouds... maybe ;)

There is no practically about it ... It IS impossible .. It would take your about 35,000 years if you spent 1 second travelling between each one.

IIRC the number of stars in FE2/FFE was 120 000. Can't remember where I saw it though.

This is my first Elite game. I'm still trying to figure out the lore. Does anyone know how much of the galaxy is populated by humans in this setting? Is this reflected in the game?

I can barely fathom the size of ED now. Another galaxy is really unnecessary. But not so long ago people would have said the same thing about 400 billion star systems.
