Traveling the slow way.

Has anyone attempted to travel between systems in supercruise? That would be interesting, not practical in the slightest, but interesting.
Could someone from frontier give us the theoretical answer?

There was a post earlier about this, someone said that there are loading issues if you try but that was from an older client version, not sure how it goes now.... id certainly hope its possible, else the universe sorta reduces its realism to me.

From reading numerous post's on players attempts it seems that you can cruise there, but its empty until you initiate a jump in, which loads the system.

I attempted it once in Beta 3.04 when travelling between nearby star systems (don't remember which), but it didn't seem possible. It took several minutes just to reach 1200C (from what I read somewhere, 2000C is the max). Even when I got to that speed, it said it would take a couple days to reach the next system. Also, after I let it run for a bit, my scanner was still showing the star and planets from the last solar system I jumped to. It didn't appear to me that those icons would ever disappear from the scanner, which made me think that each solar system is a boxed area. After a couple more minutes, I just dropped the idea and jumped to the next system.

It doesn't work that way. The systems are like maps or levels in an fps. If you wish to enter a new level, you must walk through the magical door and wait through the loading screen. In ED, the door is opened via the FSD and the associated loading screen is that tunnel animation. Incidentally, going in and out of SC within a system works the same way. There is a loading screen at the transition and if you attempt to go from one station to another without using SC, you will never get there. Not because of the time it would take but because you never loaded that map.

I tried it once on the speccy in 1985.....

I was taping the top 40 on a warm Sunday evening, off the radio AND playing on the computer.... yep, that's right, I had it all.... living the dream.... I had odd bright socks on.... I could do the robot dance at the youth club disco.... I was the only one in my class (apart from the school bully Piff) that could put an A4 piece of paper around my bicep and the two ends would not meet... I even had a Kevin Keegan perm...

Ultimately, after a couple of hours my mission was a failure, as my older brother came in and started jumping up and down, its what 14 year olds did apparently.... the floor boards were poorly put together, and the power cable to my speccy (which was on the floor) was, at best, erratic in its primary function of delivering power to said speccy... (I was given money to buy a new power pack but when Mum dropped me off at Big Bob's Computer shop I came out with a massive black bulging box with a set of wings on the front cover instead of power pack). In computer or gaming terms, it was of course the greatest choice I have ever made...

Maybe it was my young age, maybe it was my generation of not expecting everything I wanted right NOW NOW NOW, maybe it was my imagination or perhaps it was the small amount of hallucinogenic drugs one of the members of the hippie commune I grew up on used to slip into birthday cakes every now and then .... but I would happily watch the space dust fly by for an unhealthy amount of time just imagining what might appear in deep space at any moment. I would even throw myself around the room when I got hit in a dog fight.....

OK, I still do that last one sometimes when my kids are not watching. Whats the word....? Immersion?

Even if they implement being able to SC between systems (it's not horribly impossible for them to do so if they really, really wanted to), you'd run out of fuel.
