Astronomy / Space Travelling to the centre of the galaxy? Might want to take factor 10^32

The researchers then estimate how badly a planet would get fried in different parts of the galaxy. The sheer density of stars in the middle of the galaxy ensures that planets within about 6500 light-years of the galactic center have a greater than 95% chance of having suffered a lethal gamma ray blast in the last billion years, they find. Generally, they conclude, life is possible only in the outer regions of large galaxies.

That seems... logical. Though I wonder if one were to find himself near the center of the galaxy, would the sky be ask dark as it is where we are, or would it be brighter ?

It's awfully earth-centric of us to make such broad assessments of regions we know very little about. Silicon-based life positioned above and outside the Milky Way may very well be assuming the same about all stars in all galaxies; "The galactic medium is simply too chaotic for any meaningful complex life to survive for more than a couple billion years!"
