Tried 2D Again

I switched to 2D to mess with holo-me and the camera to try and get some higher resolution pics. That was fine.

I also flew around a bit and that was just horrible. I have a 32" monitor, but everything was so tiny - nice and high res, but tiny! I didn't mind 2D while out exploring last month, just jumping and honking and scanning, but just now, near outposts and other ships, it was a horrible experience. After finally switching back to VR, it was amazing how huge (actually real size) everything appeared. And after tweaking some settings and upping the HMD image quality, it actually does look pretty sharp. And I do think image quality is overrated - I don't remember it being a problem with the original Elite.

I still find it shocking to see people post in here that they think VR sucks because it's not as high res as a monitor.

yeap, especially the cockpit gets really tiny, also everything gets quite flat.. and also looks washed out (I have a ips screen) it feels quite depressing really, couldn't stand it for long.

Have done the 2D switch a couple of times as well - no, its simply not the same as VR.

VR will get better in terms of resolution - in 2-3 years we'll have better resolution and look back and laugh at the Vive and CV1. For now, yeah I'm still happy with my CV1 - it was a brilliant addition to ED.

Elite Dangerous was the reason I got VR - I mean, I'd wanted VR since day dot but nothing convinced me to part with that kind of money - and I still think 95% of VR software out there barely qualifies as demo's (Obduction and Technolust being notable exceptions), but E:D is my most expensive game to date:

Bought the game (at 2.2), fell in love (No Mans Sky refugee)
Bought a HOTAS after 1 week (Thrustmaster - thinking of upgrading)
Bought an EDTracker & Voice Attack then at Xmas treated myself to the Rift (reason was comfort and optics - no love for the company)

So yea, thanks Frontier for letting me fly a spaceship in the Milky Way, lifesize style. I may whinge about aspects of the game but it's from a place of love & respect!

Seeing is believing, and I too suffered from the "How did I ever play like this?" effect when I tried playing 2D. Higher resolution simply doesn't hold a candle to the sheer depth of presence VR brings.

Obviously, every player should know by this that VR is the way it was intended. Let's have the core game continue it's design based upon this aspect.
(please fix Map Curved Screens)

I actually can not even stand using my Studio Speakers anymore instead of CV1 headsets as it also loses the connection of immersion.

I got you beat, possibly not in a good way...
But I found elite during 1.2.
Well immediately needed a hotas, but didn't want any saitek/madcats garbage.
So ended up getting a ch hotas, and pedals, used them daily for almost two years now, and they are as precise as the day they came.

Then I got tired of my old cheap as chips 24" monitors that where more grey than black.

So in comes the 32" ultra wide, nice VA panel goes, but my 2gb 960 couldn't keep up with it.
So a 980ti gpu was procured the week after.
A tobii eye tracker just for fun.

Then summer of VR, I succumbed a Vive and a rift....
And now I can't play ED on my sweet screen, I'd rather suffer 30fps vr than that...

And now I'm trying to convince myself I don't need to build a new 1080ti based machine......

This game has gotten expensive.....

So I find it a bit funny when people ask if horizons are worth it....

Yes, the upgrade to Horizons pales before the glory of ED in VR.
Still, most of the plebs haven't seen ED in real VR and think the tripe you see in a Google Cardboard is somehow 'the real deal'. It ain't.

But, I think we're in the same boat...
ED has 'forced me' to buy;

Warthog Throttle and Stick HOTAS
ED Lifetime pass
Rift (+Touch even though ED doesn't use it)
GTX1080
New Asus mobo, i7 6700K, RAM, new SSD (mobo partially died, due to too much ED)
plus some paint jobs and a weapon colour.

I dread the moment my Rift dies and I may be forced back to a 2d universe, I suspect I just won't play ED, VR is just such a massive game changer, and 3 months ago I would not have believed that (only got the CV1 in January - paid full whack... doh!)

I must admit, the first time I put on the headset and found myself in, actually frickin' IN the ship I almost shed a tear, this is what I wanted back in 84, this is what I saw in my 14 year old brain. I've tried running ED in 2d since, fully maxed out on my 27" screen, it's just so... flat. When you put on that headset, you are in another world.

Cost wise, if I were to tot up the full expense of ED, put it up on the internet, I suspect I may not be be with my wife for much longer, but for a giggle, here goes the list in a kinda order..

Kickstarter pledge, LEP Alpha level
X52Pro Hotas
TrackIR
24" to 27" Monitor upgrade
i5 3570k mobo - 970GTX
CV1
Upgraded 970 to 1080
may be looking to upgrade mobo and cpu.

and this doesn't include the ED books and in game skins/game add-on's and stuff.

I hope this VR support of ED continues. I am concerned over the 2.3 Multicrew update, primarily the Gunner role, I can't see that working for VR for me, and if Space Legs ever makes an appearance I do hope FD supports a VR friendly version.

:)

Yeah, this game has me in for over $3000 myself - about what I paid for my 386 system back in '89.
I'm going to live with this system until two things happen - next gen VR and a major ED upgrade.

Two nice things about the 2D experience was not wearing the headset and using my desktop speakers. The rumble and feel from the speakers was pretty cool, after not experiencing that for several months. But the headset really doesn't bother me that much, and you really need the headphones for VR.

Hmm. "Normal" gaming is very comfortable. VR is more immersive. I prefer the comfort when exploring and the immersion when fighting. Currently I am exploring, so I'm using my monitor more than my Vive ^^.

:)

I have beta and been in it a fair bit.

And so far no issues in either character creator (which looks great albeit, the character seems 1.5m tall and 30cm between the shoulders)

But the new camera works great in vr, and the gunner cam will be world locked so you wont spin around with the ship, i suppose it would be less bumpy than the srv turret view.
Granted I'm one of the few who can drive around without issue in the turret ;)

Having just bought a used DK2, I played Elite in VR land all weekend. It's incredible--but also incredibly limiting in terms of how long I can stand wearing it. It's "hard on my eyes" after a while--dunno if this is something you build endurance for, or if it's just something to do in small doses. I am not having any issues going back to 2D, since I've played hundreds of hours in that space. I'm thinking I may save rift time for combat mostly, because it really shines there.
