Tried out the CV1 with a GTX970...

My GTX1080 fans died the other night, I was wondering why I was getting 1fps on the menu screen, after much messing with settings, I went tot he GPU software and saw 93ºC on the temp gauge, and fan speed indicated at 0rpm. Opened the lid, sure enough... Fans not spinning. After much messing around and testing, I concluded the card needed a warranty, so put my GTX970 back into the case.

Now, my 1080 has been replaced with a new unit, but I decided to give the 970 a fair go, because, well, I wanted to know what it can do before I put it up for sale and move it along.

I was actully rather impressed. Now, don't get me wrong, it's not u to the GTX 1080, and in station flight isn't . the quite the silky smooth VR experience that the 1080 is, but... Other than that.. I was quite impressed. In fact, I kinda facepalmed myself because I had the CV1 sitting in it's box for 2 months while I saved for the 1080 (well, I was waiting for the 1080Ti, but in the end, figured it was still a good 3 months away from actually being in a box, in my sweaty hands, on it's way to being plugged in to my PC, so decided to just get a 1080 and be done with it).

Basically, if you have a GTX 970, and you are umming and arring about a CV1 (can't speak for the Vive, as I don't have one to test), just do it. You won't get VR high/ultra, no, but it's still pretty damn cool (at VR medium settings). I did not get a chance to try the SRV, or a Hazres, but I figure that unticking a few of the fancier VR options will result in a good overall experience.

Anyway, GTX1080 G1 Gaming going back into the PC tonight, one well cared for Asus GTX970 Strix OC up for sale...

Have been dithering about getting a CV1 for a while and have just ordered one, delivery Soon. I'll try and come back to this thread with an update, i'm a complete VR virgin, so very much looking forward to the whole experience!

I am currently playing in with a GTX 970 ... Vive, instead of Rift. there is definitely room for improvement, but since the asynchronous reprojection I can play with quite good details ... and welcome to the club Kemo!

i dont understand how you could have a cv1 sat in the box awaiting a gfx card if you had a working pc already. my brain would be in a loop every four seconds open the box open the box open the box.
when i got my vive i rushed down my dinner to get it installed.

A quick update...

The CV1 arrived this pm, setup was a breeze, got a little stumped as to why ED:H wouldn't fire up on the Rift via the launcher (some error saying Elitedangerous64.exe not starting... but sorted thanks to the good people of these forums - needed to turn HMD Headphones on in the settings in ED!)

So, went through the setup, ran the demos, alien, T-Rex etc, all great, then after a little faffing, fired up ED.

OH...MY...GOD!

I've been playing ED since KS, love it, but I have not been able to check it out in VR until now. Dear god people, it's unbelievable, the sense of presence, the scale of everything, my DBS is HUGE, and what a cockpit! I've only pootled around the station and re-docked, and that has pretty much taken the whole afternoon, sooo much time spent looking around! I've yet to SC or hyperjump, land on a planet, try out the SRV, land at a station, etc...

(back on topic)

The GTX970 seems to be holding it's own, I can run on VR Medium and the FPS seems to stay at 90 for most of the time. ATW probably kicks in an amount, but seems seamless. I've yet to do much tinkering, currently running with bloom, blur and DOF off.

I'll have a look for some GTX970 optimisation posts, but if anyone has any suggestions, please do post.

anyway... gotta get back in there (huh... that really is it, you really are IN there!)

:)

I have got a pair of Asus Strix GTX970 cards, and VR is normally very good. I will get a 10 series at some time, but not until I have paid a few bills.

Wait until you get properly out into the black (a long way from any primary stars), the you will really SEE the stars. The bridge of my Anaconda is HUGE! (and, in VR, you KNOW it).

Id like to add that I havea first generation Titan, which should be right around the same range as the 970, and I haven't had a single issue with VR on my CV1.

Try it in an Asp - the view is sensational...

ASW works wonders with the 970, I'm able to run higher settings and achieve seamless 45fps around stations and a constant 90fps out in the black. That's why Oculus brought it in, so those with lower end systems could run their games better, Assetto Corsa also works extremely well with this setting and is a life saver if (like me) you can't afford a GPU upgrade just yet.
