Tried VR Elite for first time at the Frontier Expo - now thinking of getting a headset

also don't forget to train your speech regocnition, buy voice attack, and get a good profile for it.
yea vr is fun, but since you are trapped inside of the mask, you need to workaround certain flaws.

i use the vive, and also run ovrdrop for get some external tools inside of vr.

also i would wait for the first real pimax reviews after release, people rideing the hyptrain hard.
i also guess/hope we will hear something about 2nd gen vr around end of the year.

On the subject of glasses in VR, I forgot to say - if you're long sighted (i.e. if you only have to wear glasses to read or to use the computer) then you probably won't need them (I can't read this screen I'm typing at without my glasses but in VR I can happily read the forums using a desktop app' such as Bigscreen Beta without needing them at all - weird huh?).

Yes that's because the headsets project a virtual image at infinity. If you do order prescription lens inserts, be sure to use your distance prescription, not your reading prescription.

Honestly, the pimax requirements are not any different to using the Rift/Vive today with a little supersampling. If you want to get into VR then you should invest in the solution (gpu and headset) if you need to, otherwise you will be disappointed in the experience if your pc is holding it back

I’m using an nvidia 1080 with my 4kBE 1.3 supersample and everything dialed up to max settings. I can maintain a frame rate that doesn’t stutter and give me motion sickness and gives me good graphics fidelity.

I was also able to drive this with a 1060 as well .. I actually only updated the graphics card to drive my new monitor!

Good points, thanks. Have always wanted to try voice attack, been looking for another excuse to shout at my PC :D

OK thanks, a 980 Ti is the one new component I have. The PC around it is old but coping fine currently. My previous thought was wait for v2 headset + PC upgrade, but having tried VR, I'd like to not hang around and get more enjoyment from the game sooner rather than later. Rather than rush in though, I'll wait to compare new v2 sets with the cheaper v1s

Re glasses, I hadn't thought of dedicated lenses for these. I'm short sighted but wearing glasses didn't cause an issue on the demo. Longer periods might be a different story, good to know the option is there.

Thanks again to everyone for your invaluable help o7 [up]

Both are great but the Vive is better for ED IMO (most of the early issues Vive had with ED seem fixed)

I have both headsets now, Vive April 2016 and Rift 1st week of the summer sale,

ED in the Rift for me it just feels so dim and washed out, s
o much so that I thought my rift was faulty at first until I tried 2 other friends rifts which looked pretty much the same, the brightness and contrast just isn't there and it has banded greyish blacks compared to the deep blacks and vibrant colours in the Vive which is what IMO you need for space sims,
I also have a highish IPD @71.4 and get fishbowl warping aka pupil swim
in the Rift (it's slightly better with tilting it but it's still there). Also with the Rift's increased god rays and the loss of FOV especially in the Vertical, it really isn't worth the small boost in pixel density, Correct pilot scale (please fix this FD), and the minor FPS performance it offers. (Disclaimer I use the DAS on the Vive and it's very comfortable)

Yes I've tried the fixes, It has made a small amount of difference to the blacks but made the banding worse and now I get bleed on the blacks too,
TBH (as a former DK2 Owner) I brought the Rift in the summer sale expecting to be impressed and have been left slightly underwhelmed i would say,
the brightness/contrast and FOV are a deal breaker's for me, So my other half has the rift now as I'm trying to get her on back on Elite in VR :)

All of that said for £399.99 the Rift is still a great VR headset, and if it's the only option you have go for it, but for me the Vive is still my go to headset for ED and racing/flying sims too.

PS.I Now have one eye on the 8k Pimax HMD as my Vive's lighthouse's and controllers with work with it out of the box I'm probably going to get it when it go's retail..
