Trip to the edge of galaxy-Extra Fuel tank?

I am planning a trip to visit the edge of galaxy or Fringes as it is also known. I have to picked a direction yet. I am go above or bottom of milkway or just to the edge of galaxy plane.
As Immersion is super important to me, I only own 2 ships, DBX and Crusader. Somehow owning more than 2-3 ships seems unrealistic to me. I used the Crusader to go to Ishum's Reach so I know it is capable with some sacrifices. I am not sure I want to be content with those sacrifices for this trip.

I am trying to find a minivan in space, a ship that I can haul ok amount of crap or pax when I am back home, a ship with good jump range to go to places, fringes for example. Yes, there are far better ships for what I am trying to do. But I dont want to. Why do you think I like the Crusader? I have a thing for the unloveables :D I even tried the dropship once. I liked it, would have been the minivan i was looking for but jump range was just too low.

What do you think of the following builds? I tried to add a fuel tank as I heard there are far less scoopable suns on the edges. Dont want to get stranded. I added upgraded Thurster to do some canyon/surface running. I am willing to drop the shield if something is more important but would like to cary the repair limpets. Is it necessary to carry the extra fuel tank? Is the FSD booster worthwhile for the fringes. I am not necessarily looking for high jump range just to get from point A to B in record time. I will be exploring and taking my time getting to the edge. I am thinking several months.

Hi

For the type-6 I would just take 4D thrusters for jump range, a 2A power plant (for example you can set the verhicle hangar to priority 5, you never need that in flight), just one mining laser and I would replace the extra fuel tank with an auto field maintenance unit. With around 250 light years of range you should get pretty far out.

no extra fueltank needed on the edges, as both ships can do more than 2 jumps on a full tank.
fsd booster very worthwile, as it makes plotting a route between arms much much easier.
t6 vs dbe is very much about fast fuelscooping vs low fuelscooping, while having less jumprange.
i think you are missing an afmu for neutron boosting.
no need for two mining lasers, one is more than enough.
you eventually want to bring an srv to collect materials for synthesis - it is needed for some extreme jumps on the edges.
thinkabout a railgun with plasma slug special for fuel dumbing. especially on the edges it can cost some nerve to burn the right amount of fuel for that jump you want to do next.
the t6 runs relatively hot, so you want to use less power - and it is relatively fast itself, i would definetly go for d-class thrusters.
your dbe build link does not work for me.

as for which ship - i personally think the t6 has a certain science van feel to it. i totally get why taking it exploring. cockpit is cool, but the metal inside is a bit to bright for me around blueish stars. i am a DBE lover, since the ship was added to the game. my exploration build which has been only a few days in civilisation in the last years is this: https://s.orbis.zone/hh31

Thanks @goemon for your feedback! DBX is my first love in ED galaxy as well. We are bonded together for life. :D Only if Lakon put the Dolphin engine sound into DBX, I would have absolutely no bad things to say about DBX.

The reason I was searching for little more was the inclusion of Fuel Tank. Since stars are so far apart on the edge, a extra fuel tank would be almost mandatory. But from yours and @berniw response, it seems like a 32T tank would be just fine.
I have fixed the DBX build link.
The reason I did not add a 2nd AFMU, I read/heard that a single 0% health AFMU can still be rebooted and repair stuff. Is it not correct? If I remove the extra tank, that certainly allows me to fit the 2nd AFMU.

Could you elaborate a little more on the Railgun with Plasma Slug? Are you saying I may not be able to make a certain jump unless I dump some fuel, which railgun will allow me to do? I always thought lack of fuel will prevent me from jumping certain distance. Or is it that dumping some fuel will squeeze just few more LY to make a long distance jump? I may have answered my own question there.

Good point about T6 heat, I did not pay attention to heat build up at all.

The problem with fuel tanks is the weight. A full 32 tonne tank weighs 32 tonnes, and that 32 tonnes increases your total mass and reduces your jump range. It also makes using the automatic route plotter difficult, as the route plotter always assumes all your fuel tanks are full and calculates your jump-mass on that basis, which means less jump range unless you plot each jump manually.

For this reason, many explorers actually choose smaller fuel tanks, rather than buying an extra tank. An explorer needs to take a fuel scoop anyway, and full tank - even a half-sized tank - still has enough space for at least two jumps. The extra tanks are really only useful for in-bubble hopping, in a configuration where an extra tank is smaller than a fuel scoop, or if you're flying a trade route with no enroute scooping.

Since all 3 feedback says, drop the fuel tank, I am not going to against it. :)
I do understand the reasoning behind extra fuel tank not being that helpful. With fuel tank out of the way, I have no reason not to use the DBX really. Here is the revised DBX with few changes:

If i drop the FSD Booster for another AFMU, i still have 60+ LY jump range. Or drop the FSD Booster for a 4G SRV hanger and put a 2A AFMU.
The 4A Thruster gives me 500+ boost and I already engineered it few months back. Makes sense to use this one instead of a 4D. The range difference is also very minimal.

This is my DBX Build...

Zeki

It totally worked out for me. I prefer jump range over maneuverability ;)
You don't need an extra tank, and you only need one AFMU since you can reload the AMFU with low materials pretty easy.
