Horizons Triple monitors configuration . suggestion to ED

Admin please move if in wrong thread.
G'day all,
I also play X-plane 11 and Project cars2, both of these programs have built in the ability to configure triple monitors with out going into Windows/Nvidia surround screen which makes you PC combine all three monitors into one.

On the occasion when I have gone into surround screen for ED, it completely destroys the settings for the other two games, and then I have to spend considerable time resetting everything

Is it possible, in this day and age, for ED to update their controls and settings to something similar to X-plane 11 and Project Cars2 so I can have the option to configure the triple monitors from within ED?

I am sure that I am not the only one who has experienced this

While I don't have the issue that Gaffa describes I would like to see multi-monitor support improved. I would like to be able to have, for example, a separate monitor just for the lower part of the hud/instruments. I made a mockup on my in process simpit, see below. This would definitely add to the immersion if we could have a primary and secondary monitors.

Come and join us in VR, no need for any of that. Here is my set up in a cupboard.

But VR biggest issue is the low resolution, making reading text more trouble than it has to be... Saw a person trying frantically to read the panels and he almost fell of the podium he was on, since bend over to get close to the navigation panel to read that one.

Add then to this the limited FOV, you are still basically just looking ahead...

So now we know what we need, VR headset with higher resolution and a wider FOV.

And as luck has it, there is one manufacturer of that kind of VR headset... but the requirements on your computer jumps alot... that you now basically need a Nvidia Geforce 1080 TI.... and that will struggle to keep the FPS high on those resolutions....

And not to mention, that any bystanders have a pretty dull experience compared to you, but if you could have a setup like the one suggested, any bystanders have the same view as you.

And save some money as well!

How much money? would you save? And if you actually want to read text, then you have have to opt for a higher resolution VR headset, that will cost you plenty, and not to mention the requiorements on your computer aswell to manage the higher resolution and keep the high FPS.

One way to be able to accomplish this could be to have a companion app on you phone/tablet/laptop, that would display in full screen. Now it would be your choice to use the in game panels or scavenge some cheap hardware and use one or more of these to use as replacements for the in game panels, I would expect that using touch display for this to be best option.

So without having to switch the in game panel on/off to mess around, and miss what is happening in front you, you can now move you head to face the tablet, put you hand on it, and navigate that one, and still be able to have a glance on what is happening while you do this. Single monitors users have no real visual aid here at all when they use a panel, tripple monitor users have such a wide FOV, so they can access the navigation or system panel and still have a great view out the front of the cockpit.

These devices connect your computer (cable or wireless network), so they need to be on the same network (your home network), and then we do not need to fiddle to much with how to discover these etc, as there are plenty of techniques to discover local resources that broadcast their presence on the network (think stupid DLNA media players).
There should be no requirement for these devices to connect directly to any frontier services, just the computer running Elite Dangerous on your network.

I have alot of problems with NVidia surround aswell, I do not get how hard it is to remember this settings, as it feels that every 5 or so reboot, my surround settings is lost and getting all setup again was a real pain.... in the beginning it could anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes to get all monitors in their correct location.

But I have discovered a few tips and tricks to get this back up a little smoother

Enable shortcut to turn surround on/off, this way you do not have to go into NVidia really slow and stupid control panel all the time, and shut down most things running on your computer.
Remember that NVidia is totally clueless when turning off surround, so you have to manually enable all extra screens for extended desktop again. Well turning surround on can also turn off extra displays...
Also I have noticed that using Windows tool for extending desktop and arranging desktops most of the time is far quicker than trying to using NVidia control panel.

I'm looking for a good little software that can actually save a the screen layout with extended desktop, so that I use the Nvidia shortcut to disable/enable surround, and then run this tool to extend desktop and arrange all my screens according to my layout. I have tried plenty solutions and they are most of the time very unreliable.

I run four 1440p and 2 old 4:3 monitors (chat HW monitoring etc on these displays) in a 3x2 layout, all on a single monitor stand.

Another thing that you could try, run Elite Dangerous in Windowed Mode, and select a resolution to make the windows cover all three screens. You do get stuck with windows borders, and have to deal with start menu (auto hide, or move to a fourth screen). But atleast this could solve your pain of having reconfigure this all the time.

All true, but the 3D nature of it and the immersion of VR more that make up for it.

Do not confuse immersion with tech. If VR provides a player with immersion, all well and good. However a player can get just as much immersion from a PC, a console, or a laptop. Or a good chess match, for that matter.
Immersion is purely a psychological/emotional reaction to a task at hand. This is why my 3 year old nephew gets immersed with his hammer and whack-a-mole much more than he does his robot doggie that can bark and roll over on command.

The carpentry involved in framing the monitors and the egonomics of placing the controls look impressive to me. This fellow is all-in with his gaming, and I bet he is fully and completely immersed. o7

You mean using 3 monitors as 1 of big resolution ? I agree with you. Bypassing the graphics card set, you avoid having to set up your desktop every time you go back to 3 x single monitors.

But I think is pretty better and more cool for all if ED think about 3 monitors in other way.

Monitor 1 - Monitor 2 - Monitor 3

Panel 1 - Panel 2 + 3 - Panel 4

and of course the game play in all of them in any time and whatever you do

Instead of switch left or right in the game, the menu's are always in the same place and monitors, the game continues as usual and you have just to switch the head how the reality, and more, you can control what happen with the tail of the eye in the others monitors :D

Of course this option could be done with who have a really good graphic card with a lot of memory I suppose but It could be really cool and more realistic

Bad idea ? I don't think so :p :D

Hi,

I am on surround setting globally, playing lots of Horizons and i also play Project Cars, F1...
No problem so far just that enabling/disabling it repeatedly is very annoying (if willing to use
a separate display to monitor temps, frequencies or just chat while gaming on surround. A fourth display
could help yes :) ).

As for VR i don't like the idea to completely disconnect from everything, having something blinding me. I wont byte
this tech for that reason (haven't had the occasion to try neither) i prefer eyefinity or surround

@Gaffa if indeed ED implemented what you wish for, it would be great.

@Chong-su, yup too !!

Thank you all for your comments and your point of view.
I do have VR as well and run that on a separate PC , yes its immersive and has the WOW factor, but,

In this day and age, when other gaming companies recognise that gamers spend big dollars on multi screen setups and supply their games with the ability to easily configure the multi screens, I wonder why ED does not recognise this need?

Perhaps it falls into the same to hard basket as an updated method of moving around and plotting VR in the Galaxy map;
Perhaps it falls in the same to hard basket as updating exploration tools.
Perhaps it falls in the same basket as...shall I go on?

Well ED as far as VR is concerned you advertise the game as VR ready, yes it does work, but your statement is not totally correct, it's not VR ready because the Galaxy mapping tool is troublesome and a bloody mess to use..

Imho, for such and excellent game as ED , in this day and age to not cater for triple screen setup (as Project Cars II and X-Plane 11 easily do), is dismal and totally out of step with your fans.
It would be nice if you even acknowledged that such programming was in the works and didn't leave your dedicated fans blindsided until your programmers feel like attending to this matter.
