Tripping the Rift

Hello. Thought I'd take the time to document some things in my most recent expedition. Previously in March I had initiated my first significant trip as an explorer by being the first to map an object of interest in the Lychoitl sector block, an expedition that took approximately a month to perform not due to work (although I had that too), but due to the fact that I had fairly low specs for such a journey (if I recall it was in my Asp but it had full armaments a D-class drive back then and smaller scoop back then; 25LY jump if that). Even though others were thousands of LY closer I managed to tag it and also put my name to one of each kind of star out there. I came back while the Tsu event was ongoing and thus made an absolute killing on the expedition. Just a bit later I was part of the group that helped map the boundaries of the Regor sector block just outside Imperial Space.

I had recently taken a break after all this to attend to other concerns but I came back recently. Having a fair amount of funding available I tried a few tasks before I finally refitted my Asp (with new paint job and all) as a full 37LY boat. I looked for a reasonable target for my next expedition, something that was reachable but taxing to the configuration.

I found it in something that was becoming big just before I went on break: the Formidine Rift.

Needless to say a few months ago it caused quite a stir and is still an alluring region. It is possible to pass around it using the bridge but the sparse population inside it makes it...difficult and confusing to navigate. However. I wanted to see if it was possible to cross the rift proper. Ideally still following along the stated flight line projected from the Old Systems.

After a brief shakedown cruise to the nebula near Sothis...PowerPlay ended and CQC began. So there was the little issue with exploration that we had to deal with. So I went trading and mining for a bit. And then everything was fixed. Once that happened, late on 12-Oct-3301, I launched from an isolated outpost along the projected Old Systems Line.

With my new drive, I was able to do 2000ly (roughly) a day on weekdays, more on weekends with a push. Every 10 hops or so, I'd log another system into EDDiscovery. Anyone utilizing this handy tool should have noted the recently generated line that rather neatly flows along that projected path.

edd3.jpg

In just under a week and over 400 jumps, I hit the dreaded Phoi Aescs sector block; the coreward section of the rift. There was some evidence of exploration along the edge of it, some of it by suspected Dark Wheel members (or at least fans thereof).

I was going to go a little deeper. And I did.

3.jpg

It took a whole day of but was I determined to go as deep as I could while remaining as close to on-target as I could. Progress was slow however. Phoi Aescs quickly becomes a nightmare to navigate even with a 37LY capability. There was more than one point where I had to do a maximum range jump just to continue deeper.

I managed to get pretty deep considering it's a strong heliopause zone. I think I got about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way through the rift using the direct path. But, I eventually came to a point where even I couldn't continue on. But, I mapped the co-ordinates of literally every system in Phoi Aescs that I jumped into. Originally I was planning on using this to demonstrate the path across the rift bearing directly, or at least have some sort of navigational reference to future explorers. However, I had to use this information myself to escape the rift.

As previously stated, it's very difficult to determine where to go in here. A lot of trial and error. And while one is so focused on trying to go forward, the way back is quickly forgotten. If I hadn't done such aggressive mapping using EDDiscovery up until this point, it would have been a full day at least before I'd be out of that mess. If I could even get it properly done, this area of space is filled with traps. Fortunately with the data I had inputted into the system earlier I was able to calculate a flight path out relatively quickly. It was a 1000LY trip back to Hypiae Aim sector block, just to go 400-600ly deep into the rift!

I'm not sure if anyone has managed to fully get across the way I tried...but I will say this, now that I've been in it up close and deep. I think it's possible with current technology. Maybe not in an Asp...but, I think if you had a stripped Anaconda (and I mean STRIPPED; smaller fuel tank, no heat sinks!)...I'd say that it would just be about possible to cross to the other arm directly through the rift. 40-41LY minimum. If a ship comes along with 45-50LY jump, then the trip might even be somewhat comfortable. I think it's just barely impossible with an Asp though, at least with the route I tried to take through the heart of it.

In any event, I made it back out after a hairy dive into it. It took another few days to get back to the sphere. I made a few detours for some black holes along the way. I hadn't noticed before with the music on, but black holes make some rather disturbing sounds up close with a direct view of them. In any event, I also found a Herbig star out there, which I later discovered was the one type of star I missed in my first deep dive months ago.

I was a little nervous on the way back. When I left it was fairly safe along that flight line, or at least it was relatively. But since then there's been the Sothis smuggling rush and while that's died down I have not doubt that there's still trouble around that area of space. Fortunately I was a bit out of line for that kind of trouble and managed to make to back safely.

I did make a good profit on it as well; 21,412,001 credits. Using some math I managed to optimize my ability to find habitable planets so I got nearly as many hits on terraforms and Earths on this jaunt as I did in my first (much longer and less prepared) deep dive, although I used a different method than the Flash/Java calculation tool that is provided elsewhere in this forum.

So my Asp is a bit beat up, but I feel like I did some good work. Mapped the dark part of the rift a bit, and made some decent coin out of it. Got my name on a few nice spots too. All in a days work.

I might post some points of interest later on, but it's getting late and I need to sleep in the King's suite where I'm at tonight after all that. I'll post those later, probably.

Great journey and write up :)

The Rift is a place I've spent some time in myself, so know how frustrating it can be to cross it. There are maps of that region now, with points of interest players have marked, so if you ever want to add something unique or interesting that you found on your journey out there, please feel free to add them too.

Great work commander!

I'm going to be coming back to the bubble via the Perseus Arm. It's very tempting to see if I can cross it in my own "stripped Anaconda" on the way back. Although that would take me in absolutely the wrong direction for a return journey... :D

Nice report!
We must have been in the same region when you tried to cross the Rift. My way went from the Heart and Soul directly to the rift and across. I made it in my 34 ly ASP not using the formidine bridge. But it took me a day too. In the end I had to use a "badlands" cluster to get to the outer arm which worked just fine. Once in the outer arm there are plenty of stars to plot jump routes.

Yes, I spent some time observing that map before setting out, very handy. Using that guide I decided to try for Hard Mode, as that was more or less the most direct line through along the direct Old Worlds bearing anyway. Or in other words, right though the wall. After all, can't be too hard with a long field Asp right?

Needless to say it didn't work as well as I had hoped as the previous post sort of indicated. It's possible it a good portion of the way in there, I did go deep enough that way that I stopped seeing any evidence of further exploration all together. For reference my next target system was Phoi Aescs LX-L D7-0 which is a bit off the green line towards the F. Bridge. It's pretty much impossible to get there though unless a 50LY jump is made possible but I attempted to get as close as possible. In fact there are no nearby systems that keep on the Old Worlds direct bearing in the rift so it was very much a case of "whatever is closest".

I had seen some of the badlands clusters myself but thought that was too far off my flight path to want to attempt; additionally I knew that they were probably already explored reasonably well (and when I did drop into that general corridor briefly to check I saw plenty of evidence to back that up).

Still there were a few interesting things in there that got missed. No surprise that, big galaxy, even this little part of it.

Anyway! Points of interest along this route.

Hypoae Aim FL-P e5-1: Herbig Ae/Be with a large T-Tauri and some gravel. Booked the complete system but if anyone wants to see one of these easy, it's about 8KLY out from the Bubble going that way.

Gludgoe NB-X b1-3: System itself isn't too interesting but it's as far out as I got going this way where I saw confirmed a Wreckage Signal.

Phoi Aescs QJ-T b58-0: Rift incursion system. Grom's already been here but if anyone wants an unclaimed snowball and brown dwarf, they are welcome to it; only 2-3 AU out from the from M-class.

Phoi Aescs QI-B d13-3: Interesting large binary system. No terraforms or Earths but 3 life gassies, 2 water and 1 ammonia floater. Interesting bit is around the B-star there's the ammonia and one of the water lifers co-orbiting each other. Pretty uncommon for them to have easy access with each other so have a look at it. Better yet wait a year or two when the next phase of planetary landings are ready and do some scientific exploration of the atmospheres here.

Phoi Aescs HW-E d11-6: Got sort of off path here but there is an (already claimed by Lorrad) Earthlike here if you wanna have a look. Unlike a lot of Earthlikes the air here is pretty good (0.7 ATM, 29.7% O2) and gravity should be around 1 to 1.1g. 3500 day year and only 3/4 of a day spin but otherwise that's not bad form at all. At 304K it is a little toasty though.

Phoi Aescs FW-E d11-2: My least favorite system in the whole block so far. 36.9LY leap, you have to go in there on fumes in an empty Asp. And then it's a hex system with close-ish co-orbitals. RNG had a bad nanoangstrom there! Only one planet 40 AU out, so we can guess how valuable it is. Still if anyone manages to get there with a buggy come December might be a good place for screencaps.

Phoi Aescs AQ-G d10-1: Quite a few zooming. Picture is work 1000 words, right?

7.jpg

Rather nice view, one of the nicest I saw in there. Also worth the time as it has a water world at the D-star. Not a terraform water but still a good pickup nevertheless.

Phoi Aescs YZ-O c19-0: Deepest I was able to get in the thick of the wall. Nothing much to say about it otherwise, just a low-rate star with two snowballs. Just a little bit more range and I could have done it from around here. It's only a few 100LY in but to jump back out to the main disk it's 1000LY of jumps, some of which are fairly risky.

Gludgoe SS-U d2-10: Ran into this one on the way back. Risky system, how does an F and G star 0.01 AU for each other sound to you? Orange color to watch out.

Gludgoe WN-K c8-15: And then just a few jumps later this death trap! K and an M star almost contact binaries (and probably would be with a little more graphics development). Nearly rammed right into the M on entry and was getting cooked fast. Didn't get hurt at all but someone in a ship with worse thermal management than an Asp (IE: many other ship classes) would do well to never go here. Pic related.

8.jpg

There's some low mass pebbles here if you wanna have a try at it though, I didn't bother.

Hegaa FK-R d4-20: You like money? Sure, we all do! Come here then. I usually don't reveal my hot spots but this one was rather excellent. A-Star = an Earthlike, 2 terraforms and a water. B-Star = Another terraform. C-Star = Yet another terraform and a water terraform! That's 5 rock terraforms, a water terraform, a solid water and an Earthlike in one little package! And the Earthlike is co-orbital with one of the terraforms about 4.5 AU out from the main star.

(continues ranting) And the the earthlike is superb. 1.11g, decent air (0.64 ATM at 25.6% O2), 353 day year AND *exactly* 1 day rotation! Only downside is that it is a bit nippy at 268K I suppose, but if you are into log cabins and space deer you can't do much better than this.

Outorst JY-O b33-0: Ran into this on the way back when I popped into here.

Don't want to know what happened to such a large fleet, but there is a rather warm world around the T-Tauris there if you want to have a look. Usually they only have snowballs.

So that about does it.

I am attempting to cross the rift in about a week I estimate. My plan is to utilize the max FSD boosts to get across in my 32ly ASP, that should give me 60LY jump range BUT I cannot do it unless I find Pollomium and Niobium which is what I am searching for tight now in the NGC 7822 nebula. Does this sound like a pheasible plan?
