Newcomer / Intro trouble docking

I am centered over the pad and I decend and touch the ground but I can't dock. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I am lined up buy I have to retry positions many times before I can dock. Why is that?

there is only 1 angle for docking when you approach the pad. i learned that in the beginning of the game with the small stations.

if you decend and is over the platform and it doesnt work. try turning the ship around the other way and dock from there.

like when you are in a base. the position you can dock is the angle facing inwards of the base. facing outwards when you launch and leave. im pretty sure you cant face outwards when you dock.

You have to be centered with the back of your ship facing you. Not the front and not a side. Once you get that, you can dock reliably.

As others have already said, are you the right way round?

Also, and not as silly as it sounds, but is your landing gear down? :p

Sounds like you need to go through the docking tutorial a few more times...

1) as Engadine has said, make sure your landing gear is down, you can't dock without that being down.

2) on the little docking computer that pops up your ship should always face north. any other direction and you can't dock.

Always come on the pad from the jet blast deflector side which shoud be behind you once landed. Most of the time I don't need to use the down thruster, approach speed around 35, lowering the landing gear just before the pad will get speed down to 15. Once low over the pad I slow down under 10 and cut throttle once at the center. Docked ! :)
