Trouble finding certain ships

I've been playing since launch day on PS4 and like the look of the passenger liner class of ships (dolphin, orca, etc.) but I have not seen a single one in any shipyard. Is there a good place to find them, or is it random? Sorry if this has been asked and answered already.

First, have you Horizons?
If not then the Dolphin and Beluga are unavailable to you. You can still get an Orca though.
Ship availability is fixed on a per station basis, so doesn't change.
This site can help you find what you are looking for if you are happy to go outside of the game.

I have Horizons. Thanks, I'll have a look there.

Had the same problem when I started the following link will show where everyone is for sale, pay attention to the date and time, because someone else may have already got it.
https://eddb.io/station
If you insert more data as to where you are, the faction your in yadi yadi yada, it will narrow it down closer.

I'm having a hard time finding specific modules. I've tried eddb, looking for better Passenger Cabins for my Asp Explorer. It tells me which systems and stations I can find them in, but when I travel to those stations there is no Passenger Cabin stock at all, aided from the 2E default cabin.

What size compartment are you looking at? If it's a size 2 then you can only get the economy. Sizes and available cabins:
Size 2 : Economy
Size 3 : Economy and Business.
Size 4 and above : Economy, Business and First.
(Luxury cabins are restricted go Dolphin, Orca and Beluga)

I'm not sure which specific options are available for the Asp Explorer. I'll go with whatever I can afford at the time, probably. Lol. The 2E is stock, but I've never seen another Passenger Cabin type available at all for the Asp X in the various stations I've been to.

AFAIK all PS4 ED come with Horizons Season pass. I actually not sure about the online store version, but the physical ones comes with booth.

The PS4 Store offeres seperate purchases. Basic ED 25 Euro and "Commanders Edition" which includes Horizons for 49 Euro. Of course you may buy the "season pass" for horizons for 25 Euro on top to the basic version.

The compartment size determines what is shown as available. The AspX has 1xsize6, 1xsize5, 3xsize3 and 2xsize2 compartments. Selecting the size 6 compartment will let you see all the cabins available. Which you can fit into which compartment will depend on it's size. If you are selecting a size2 compartment then all you will see is what will fit there, which for passenger cabins is a 2E.

To add to what others have said - modules also go in and out of stock, so if you use the 3rd party site like eddb it's worth checking when the information was updated and go somewhere that's been updated recently (eddb has an Outfitting Update on the station page, for example). I know that caught me out once...

Indeed it can be very annoying when trying to find certain ships or modules for sale in this game, when other ones seem to be everywhere.

It's also annoying that either because you don't have the cash to buy certain ships or modules when you see them or you're on a mission, if you don't make a paper or electronic note as to where they were, you might know you saw something for sale, but then not remember where the hell it was later :) .
(Particularly you might say to yourself that you'll surely see what you're looking for again soon and not take note of it, then be kicking yourself later that you didn't make a note... :) .)

But of course even when you have the money to buy a particular ship, the fact that this game won't let you buy a new ship or switch to another of your own if you can't fit your current cargo in them, can confound the ship searching problem.

Another annoying problem is finding a ship for sale, but your inner Ferengi/Teladi (or just good old fashioned miser), not letting you buy the ship in question now because you know that it's available for a discount, SOMEWHERE!... :) .
(Similarly it's annoying trying to find stations that offer every available upgrade for sale.)

Anyway long story short, as i mentioned in the following thread:- https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/365636-Shipyard-Showroom!/page2
I've only seen the Dolphin for sale in two stations that i can remember, but somewhere i know you'll find one for certain is at Hamilton Gateway in the sector Wolf 406, which is within one 20 light years jump of Engineer Tod "The Blaster" Mcquin's home sector Wolf 397, while the following wiki page lists several (though an incomplete list of sectors) where it's available, including a handful where available for a 15% discount:- http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Dolphin :) .

25 euros? yeesh, I paid 40$ canadian for the main, and another 40$ for horizons XD
(not that I'm complaining((too hard)), its been worth every penny :D)

So I'm all sorted on my confusion over ship outfitting and module types.

As far as Passenger Cabins go, what do nicer Cabins mean for the sake of missions? Better payouts?

For example, aside from Passenger count, what is the difference between a 6C First Class Cabin that seats 6, and a 6D Business Class Cabin that seats 16?

Different classes of passenger have different requirements, some will fit better with your play style than others. Take a look at the mission boards, including the ones you can't accept yet, and see what type of passenger suits you - then fit those cabins and carry those passengers. If you find the pay isn't enough then change the passengers you are targeting.

Basically try stuff out :)

first class passenger get angry easier and faster and are more prone to not paying when angry. Because I get in, choose, and get out quickly. I'll not receive a request until after I'm at the next dock. Which makes catering to their request impossible, thus a free ride on my dollar. Though one can haul more people with economy, bussiness generally pay better add the fact that eco passenger can be upgraded to bussiness for free as long as they can stay in their group then one can haul as many or more when the case warrents. My Orca has one 32 eco and three bussiness (30) or if one wants 64 eco passengers, thus one can stack eco's like crazy.

Here's what i do.
At every station that's equipt, I go shopping, if I have some case to spend and something i want or may want is available. I'll store something with the same compartment size, buy and install the item i want. Then store it and reinstall what ever I had place their to make room. Yes, when it's time, sometimes you have to wait a few minutes for your stored items to get to you, but, you don't have to remember where they are.

One should have an idea as to what ship and features they want next, some of the features are already on your present ship, thus you wont need to buy them later. Always disassemble a ship prior to selling it. Unless for what ever reason I don't understand you want to save the ship. Though I did at first, I no longer do. Cash in hand is better than having it in dry dock. But to each their own.

Nope. There are three game buys available: 1. Just the game, no Horizons, 2. Horizons as an add-on if you've got 1 already, and 3. the Commander thingie (not on the PS4 right now) which has both.
