Trouble getting to an Engineer...

I currently use an Anaconda for exploring and some tourist travelling, so i thought that I would try to get my FSD upgraded, so twice now I have got to the system which the engineer is in only to be interdicted and blown up in seconds - costing some 24 million.... can anybody give me any suggestions on how I can get to an engineer without getting blown up by some '' who I really don't know what they get out of it.....
It is really putting me off going anywhere near engineer's to get upgraded

By other players? Engineer systems are quite popular with the Online Disinhibition Effect crowd. Going solo or private group is the only thing that helps in that regard ...

There's also iridium wing. I was helped out in beta by someone in iridium and they said that they will escort not only explorers from the black to the safety of a station, but also around the bubble, engineers being an example :)

Another alt....
Go there in a sidey and do a ship transfer?

Be very aware of other ships when in an Engineer system. When I see other ships in supercruise, I target them and ensure that my ship is moving orthogonal to theirs (i.e. not near their interdictor cone) while heading away from the jump-in - even if that means making a major loop and coming back to the target planet from the other side.

Approaching a base, try and come in from a steep angle so that by the time you leave glide you're already on top of the base and can request docking immediately. Ideally, you'll be fast enough that bad guys don't have time to react.

Leaving a base is particularly dangerous as you'll be mass-locked. Before leaving, you can look for a target star that is above you (so you can make a direct high wake jump, without the planet getting in the way); leave the pad, boost vertically until you get out of the mass-lock zone and high wake.

I've found some of the Engineers are much more dangerous to visit than others; typically, the lower-requirement Engineers and anywhere selling weapons is more likely to be host to eejits. If you have a choice between Engineers for a given upgrade, pick the one who is most obscure.

Thanks gang, some good points there - yes it was another commander, so Solo would be a good ploy - never having had a interdictor on any of my ships, I didn't know about the cone....
Not sure when I want to 'try again' as I now need to build up some funds....
