Horizons Trouble landing on planets

I was off for the summer, recently came back to the game, can count the number of planetary landings I've made on one hand.
During my recent exploration, I was finding systems with moons that have the blue crescent circle, and tried a few times to land on them.
Enter atmosphere, cruise, fine, slow deploy gear, and try to land.
Every time the minimap would show red, leaving me unable to land on the moons.
Is there a secret I'm missing out on?

What are you flying...it can get difficult to find a suitable spot for a bigger ship.

Make sure landing gear is down and just keep gliding near the surface until you see blue.

If you find a spot that is blue but then loses it as you move down (because it is on a slope) then just hit FAoff and let gravity do the landing.

Nothing fancy, just an asp, low grav moons. It's possible I became a bit impatient low flying looking for blue, flat terrain, as I was trying to keep it simple.
Since I didn't miss anything, I'll chalk it up to bad luck.
