It would be so exciting if Elite Dangerous could truly support mulit-monitor setups, not just with Nvidia Surround, but with viewport settings that let you properly choose the field of view for each monitor.
We do have options like Nvidia Surround, but it falls short of delivering the same level of immersion and customization as you'd get in a driving sim or flight sim. Nvidia Surround allows you to extended display across multiple monitors, but it has no ability to adjust offsets and field of views. This limitation means we're not getting the full potential of our multi-monitor setups, leading to a less immersive and awkward gaming experience, especially on triple-monitor where the edges of the screen are very distorted. Even entry-level graphics cards support triple monitors these days and lots of people have build impressive flight sim and racing sim rigs using them. As cool as VR is, it's not for everyone and there are still big communities of people building awesome simpits around TVs, monitors, and projectors. If you want to play Elite on a setup like this:
Or this:
You've got to have two basic controls for each monitor that we don't have right now: field of view, and lateral rotation. In Xplane for example, that looks like this:
With just those two numbers, you can properly dial in how much you should be able to see out the left, front, and right viewport of your setup, which opens up a huge world of simpit building and other goodness.
I'm confident that if Frontier did this and then made some posts in the right forums online, everyone with a flight sim or racing sim would have to at least try it out, and you'd generate a nice burst of youtubers, sim racers etc who would want to come and check out the game, and generate media around it. I'll bet you'd also get a few people who'd build simpits especially to play Elite.
At its core I know that Elite is a game, not a simulator, but it would be so exciting to borrow just this one little slice of what simulators offer their users, to open up a whole galaxy of new ways to play the game. It seems well within the capabilities of the game engine (VR is a much harder problem to solve than multiple camera viewports), I hope we can generate enough interest around the idea to get Frontier's attention and make this happen.
