Trumbles 2014

Looking at the latest alpha is so incredible that I don't think little furry objects on the screen would really do it any favours....HOWEVER !!

How about a Trumble virus !!
This would be a organic virus that can infiltrate your computer systems causing all sorts of problems like Hud display messages like "Good Morning Captain" Or "Self destruct activated" anything to hinder a pilots instruments ...Passed on by bad food cargo maybe and the solution is the same Fly close to a sun so the radiation kills the virus...

That way we get a bit of nostalgia without anything to corny added ?

Short answer? NO.
Long answer? HELL NO

Depends on how nostalgic you want to get compared to how cool you want to get in moving forward. Needless to say, Elite and Frontier were somewhat 'British' in their ethos and outlook, and that was and still is kind of a good thing for the most part in view of the endless Manga and US-influenced stuff so prevalent in sci-fi. But there are some aspects which were a bit cheesy and uninventive, not anywhere near as bad as calling that mineral 'unobtanium' in Avatar of course, but still fairly weak. One is of course the name 'thargoids' which was, frankly, a bit lame, and the other was Trumbles, which although a sort of understandable nod to Star Trek, was a bit poor for all that.

I'm all for a bit of nostalgia, and certainly all for a bit of Britishness too, but we have to bear in mind that Frontier will be aiming for not just old Elite players, but also a new audience of players. So let's be brutally honest here, if new players see Trumbles turn up in the game and have no point of reference for the nostalgia, they'll just think it is crap.

I agree Trumlbles is a bit naff. But for me, Thargoids is a bit 50s B-movie sounding too. Has anyone got any better sounding suggestions without resorting to American or manga style stuff, as pointed out above?

That's why I said a computer system virus rather than a cuddly toy ;)

I rather like the idea of a Trumble virus. Even to the point where your HUD flickers and shows 8bit Trumbles to annoy the hell out of you... Forcing you to go to a station and pay for a virus check/clean :)

+1 :)

There's enough problems in alpha 3 without them writing gameplay pretend bugs into the thing :D

Ship infestations would be interesting. A lot of space critters could be a problem that needs cleaning up in first person. Not just infesting ships, but also space ports or alien organism contamination on other planets (Could just be weeds who would unbalance an eco system).

I don't like the idea of a biological virus causing glitches in a computer system and needing a flyby next to a star though :) It was fun in Elite as a easter egg but should be more realistic now.

As a BBC Micro kid I never got to see the Trumbles first time round. I am however keen that all the fierce lobsters and furry frogs that inhabited the universe make a comeback. It wouldn't feel right otherwise.

Trumbles are no less relevant today than they were 30 years ago! There is always room for some humour even in a 'serious' space-sim. Don't let the flashiness of the alpha builds delude you into thinking that bizarre events won't happen in the game :)

Humour is part of human nature. It raises its head in the most unlikely of places. You can't completely represent the universe without it.

is this what happens anyway if you don't get your ship / computer serviced on a regular basis (apparently it's worth more if you do) ..

I love the virus idea .. or how about interrogating another player's on-ship cpu; open their cargo doors by remote control and get the ship to eject their cargo?? (haha) ..

(HIGHLY illegal practice though)

I agree the kookiness is fun .. once the game is stable you could imagine this infestation infecting the galaxy, on a procedural generation basis .. perhaps followed by a harmless predator (ship's cat) that solves the problem (available from your local space station, for a price, and allowing the devs to control the outbreak from cambridge?)

Or a human pandemic; that makes the pilots' flight-control arm go into spasms .. ??
