Trying my hand at "other" stuff

Well, after a LONG break of a couple of months I got back into the game and hit a personal target of 10k systems visited, was pleasantly surprised at the payout I got from a modest exploration trip (when did payouts get buffed?) took me to 275mill, so I thought "what the hell" and bought a python, a rated it as much as I could within reason and did some passenger mission...but it was more travelling, so I bought some cargo modules and found a good system around a mill an hour, but it involved gold one way and I got fed up of the pirates, and trading is possible even more boring than exploring. At least I see new(ish) stuff every jump exploring!

So I did a bit of engineering, G3d some modules, set about getting Sirius permit and ranking up with some factions to get other engineer invites. Been doing a lot of general missions and it's been a goodish experience over all, different to exploration. Had some issues with a black box mission and almost lost my Python to a turd NPC pirate. I was panicking at 90% hull, but got away and evaded the subsequent attempts at getting me. One thing I have re-learnt though is that I'm NOT good under pressure in games just like in life. Ones brain seems to want to eject itself out my posterior when things get heated. I've done Nav BHing before but that's when I get to choose who and what I fight.....not good when I can't.

Oh been out to see the Thargoid basey thingy and took some nice screenies for my Elite album. Used the payout to rank with Sirius Corp to get aforementioned permit.

I find myself opposite of yourself! I had been in the bubble since I had started for the better part of a year, did quite a bit of HAZ RES Bounty hunting in my old FAS "Feet First" and moved up to a Python "Demeter" for some Trading/BH/CG. After a while it felt like the same day in and day out so I kitted out my DBX "Fleeting Winter" and am currently underway to the Bubble Nebula.
So I gotta ask for curiosity sake, how far out from the bubble did you explore? I'm hoping to stay out for about a month or so since 2.3 bumped up the pay from exploration data and hearing you hit 10K systems and came back with ~200 mil makes me feel pretty optimistic this will be a well worth journey.

I didn't get that payout in one go because I've been in and out of the bubble quite a bit over the years (don't like the thought of a mistake costing all my exp data), I got Elite with a trip to Sag A back in 2015 so the payouts were lower then, also I tend to use shorter jumps (economic I think it's called)(not with the Sag A trip tho!), so often didn't get that far out. I did a little 100 system route to get Exp data to sell to Sirius Corp and that was around 15 million give or take (I don't keep much of a track other than the total) First page of 50 was about 11 mill, and that's with no "first discoveries".

The "modest" trip a few weeks ago I took was about 1.5 kylies out and netted me close to 50 million (I was sat on 230ish for yonks and was aiming for 250, so the extra 25 mill was very nice!), still some first discoveries out there...a few complete systems too. Every so often I'd just stop where I was and just go to the nearest "unknown" system nabbing as much as I could. I'd like to be able to stay out for months on end, but the thought of losing the data feels like a tightening noose around my neck after a couple of weeks so I often turn back.

That seems much more in line with what I've read up online lately, but I did hear a rumor of a 200+ system route that would net something around the 200+ Mil range. Might make a trip out to Sag A just for the experience. I honestly wish I had just a tad more patience for the whole system scans but unless I find anything of relative interest I just make the next jump. If you're well prepared enough I'd definitely head out for a few week journey myself but, seeing this being my first "toe in the water" I'll take my experiences back and stock up before heading out again, and leave that Bubble to Bubble Nebula Expedition for another time, been meaining to mess around with a Fed Dropship Miner build on the fringes of the bubble for a bit as well...

Are you referring to the "road to riches" thing? https://pastebin.com/hCf3iwe6 I'm tempted to try that to fund a larger ship.

I must add my first trip to Sag A was aborted after about 5 kly!! Then a week or so later I tried again and did it. Patience is NOT something I'm good at so it was quite tortuous at times. God knows how people get out to Beagle point!

Yeah I believe it's that, Zero to Hero or whatever it was, tempting for the exact same reason!

Oh jeeze, how did that go soo wrong before it even started? I feel that though, hearing how Beagle Point is not for the faint of heart really is dissuading me to go, for now, until FDEV won't have any updates for a month or so then I may attempt it. (key word being attempt)

Take heat sinks audio books and a sloe gin*.

You don't have to take gin. There are other intoxicants available.

It didn't go wrong per se, I just wasn't ready for it, looking at the galaxy map and seeing how much of a baby step I'd taken in comparison to how long it had taken me to get 5kly out. But it was good practise and I did it in the end. Give it a go and don't let it put you off if you come back early.

Crappy payout for me back in 2015 though!! Not enough to get a decent Python build so I lost a bit of interest after that and had a looong break from the game, Horizons brought me back for a little bit on and off and I crawled past 200 mill. I do wish the "scan" process was better I bore easily and coupled with a lack of patience is not conducive to exploring, but the Galaxy in Elite is such an amazing feat of programming and I'm risk averse so it's a good way to make money in that respect! :D

Sounds like there is a story there, what went wrong?

Will have to give it a go! Definitely good on heatsinks, but I could use a good read and drink too out in the black!

Will have to try it out once I get my Anaconda fitted properly then! Might even see a few interesting sights!
Ahhhh the good old days before the payout bumps, I left around the same year for the same reason, wasn't making nearly enough to firmly grasp interest, and about a year after I kept getting the newsletters I figured I'd see what all was new and exciting. However with the upcoming 2.4 and beyond I'm really curious to see where the team is going back to work on the core gameplay and QoL improvements, I'm particularily interested to see how they improve both mining and exploration.

If you run EDDiscovery you can get an overlay to display the details when you scan a body - including a reasonably accurate estimate of the habitable zone when you scan a star. If you're cherry-picking what you scan being able to quickly and reliably estimate what is most likely to be terraformable can make it a much better proposition in cr/hr terms, especially now that the pay out for terraformables has been bumped to several hundred thousand a piece plus likely first discovery bonus.

beagle is all about the journey, the system is the same as any other but break your journey up to points along the way and it's easy, best time to go is after an update as you have plenty of time until the next one so your not missing anything!

Took me 8 weeks return real time and I'm a very casual player with limited game time - that's a hell of a lot quicker than when I first went with a 30ly range asp and no neutrons!

I came back with 856m credits if that's inspiration for you ;)

No story really, I just had a tonne of exploration data and (at the time) not much money, so came back to sell...had a few close calls with binaries when it was possible to jump too close to one (passed through a few stars back in the day), so I was worried I'd lose it all. I explore for the money as well the experience. second attempt money wasn't quite such a big issue so I settled into the trip with a better mindset.

Oh.....my!!! :D very tempting

maybe one day I'll attempt it! Farting about with missions is actually entertaining me quite a bit now
