Trying my hand at trading, need advice

Just bought a cobra outright with my bounty hunting profits. I have 48T cargo space and a jump range of 10ly fully laden. I can only seem to manage profits in the range of 10k-20k per run. What am I doing wrong as I hear people make 10 times that much in a cobra.

It really depends on where you are as people go to great lengths to find the best trade routes. http://www.elitetradingtool.co.uk can be used to help track down good spots. It is a little cheaty but it is really just many Commanders sharing their trade notes as they visit stations.

I also find this incredibly helpful. Basically you screenshot the commodities screen and feed the screenshots in to let it "read" the data and produce spreadsheets. Once you have a few you can then start looking for places with high supply and places that buy that commodity where demand is high and calculate your potential profits.

Having more cash in the bank helps as you can start trading more expensive stuff.

If you are making 20K on a 48T trading run that is a profit of 416 credits per ton, which is pretty good. I have a Hauler and the max per ton I can get is 3-400 depending on what I can trade. Always go for metals and minerals as they bring in the biggest profits.

Do rares trading, you can get about 15k cr/ton doing that. But after you can afford a bigger ship (Type6, ASP), its not going to make more profits for you since having bigger cargo room doesn't mean you can buy more rares.

I'm trading rares in my Cobra, 56 cargo capacity, I calculated that I'm getting about 630k cr/h. Feels very small when you realize that ASP costs almost 7 million, and atleast another 7 million in modules to make it not useless. Not to even mention the Pythons and Anacondas.
