Ship Builds & Load Outs Trying something different with a Clipper...beams and cannons...

Thought I'd try something a little different on my Clipper. Took off the large pulses and medium multi-cannons and stuck on medium beams and large cannons. The medium beams still shred anything Cobra and below while a few shots from the cannons make short work of Clippers, Drop Ships, and even Anacondas. Power consumption seems to be better than large pulses. All are gimballed, fwiw.

It is a significantly greater expense, and it's not easy lining up the shots with the cannons, but I think I'm gonna stick with it a while.

Try it in a CZ.

I have a Clipper because I love the ship design, how it flies, and how it sounds.
However.

Every time I try to combat fit it and take it for a violent spin I am shocked over how little the 7A shields protect me. I guess I have gotten too accustomed to the protection in the Python and the Vulture, but come on! The Clipper, with a hull mass of 400t, can fit a 7A shield generator compared to the 6A on the Python, at 350t hull mass, and the Clipper shields feel like paper mesh compared to the Python's! So I pay 45M extra (if not on sale) for lousier working shields? eh? Is 50 tonnes that much of a difference?
Yes, the Clipper is cheaper than the Python, but this is illogical.

Needless to say, my beloved Clipper falls short every time I am selecting a ship going for some serious fighting or even trading; It really could use dome Dev Love!

Edit: Give it an extra hardpoint (L) under the snout and I will consider it a balancing factor... ;)

I sold my $90M Clipper to help fund an 8A pp for my conda, if that tells you anything.

The clipper is a great replacement for a T7 as soon as you can afford one, and that's about it.

I mean...I get it...it's not a "combat" ship, by design. It's a multi-role, and in that, I think it excels. I can RES hunt with it and have, in the past, done ok in CZs. I accept that it's not ever going to be on the same level as a FDL, Python, or Anaconda as a PvP or whatever combat ship.

Lol...no, it sucks. Was RES hunting when some dude in an Asp decided he wanted a piece of me...he combat logged once, then came back and I finally managed to ram him to death...but that setup with two large cannons sucks...

PA is fun in pve, but slower ttk, as you have to take time lining up shots. Satisfying when you connect and hear "fizzz-pop-shields down".

If going cz, all gimballed, them 3 gimballed pulse and one gimballed large cannon is very very efficient and quick.

Overall, I find one large fixed beam in 1fire group and 2gimbal pulse + gimbal mc in the other, gives best allround flexibility for 2 or 4 pips in WEPs, pve farming, piracy and even ad hoc pvp.

The secret is to set up one fire group to match your 4pipwep Regen in energy spend, while also being high DPE, and balanced in both shield and subsystem damage application. This is your bread and butter. If you are 2pipswep then moderate your fire, but the DPE is still good. Gimballed pulse/MC or Cannonparty works well here.

The other fire group is your fixed BIG GUN. You use this to spend surplus capacitor wherever best. Beams/bursts/plasmas are great in this role.
