Newcomer / Intro Trying to be sociable...

Hello all,

I'm very much enjoying my first few hours floating about in my little sidewinder and there seems to be a lot of other people about too. I've tried to speak to a couple of them by targeting, pressing Enter & typing a message (which sppears under COMMS as expected) but I've never had a reply.

I'm just wondering if I'm not doing it right or if no one's noticed my message so far. Any pointers on speaking to fellow commanders while out and about?

Don't worry, not everybody will be a chatty cathy. In my experience not everybody knows how to respond yet or answer a comm. For clarity make sure you are starting a text chat with them when typing. The first thing I usually do is call a Commander on the comm to see if they answer before initiating a chat. Visit me sometime in Morgor (CMDR Kane Vilorde), I will gladly share some tales with you and provide you with tips. Good luck Commander and fly safe.

Agreed with kanevilorde - not all players are sociable, and some don't notice the chat window. You're doing it right though - try flashing your lights at them to get their attention (hotkey default set to L) or shoot at them if you're feeling bold. That'll usually get their attention (Usually)

A lot of people will be white-knuckling their first few supercruises, too terrified of being interdicted or flying into a planet to risk stopping for a chat.

You're doing it right - but it can be hard to spot since whatever you type shows up in their comms in the upper-left - an often ignored section of the screen.

Do keep in mind that a lot of the time you aren't being deliberately ignored - the other pilot is just too busy watching controls or paying attention to other things to notice your chat. Flying in Elite requires some attention, especially for newer players, and we've got a much higher proportion of them just now! :)

I often get hailed during my jump countdown... and by the time I remember how to cancel (since I almost never have need to cancel a jump), I'm in the wormhole and it's way too late to reply.

Elite requires a bit of concentration when flying about, be it in supercruise trying to avoid interdiction, lining up on an asteroid for mining or flying to dock. I know I rarely check the comm panel unless I'm expecting a message and have missed messages from other commanders. Pilots may be busy, if they are like me during a long supercruise, just looking around at the galaxy or checking out my faction sliders. With all the new pilots out there, I bet a lot of them aren't sure yet how to respond.

Keep it up, though, someone will transmit back!

These particular emoticons seem to be popular, by the way. Try them out:

\o/ - (arms over head) Hey! or Hooray!
o/ - wave
o7 - Salute

Also some might want to genuinely reply but are confused when they bring up comms and your name doesn't show up. If they haven't targeted you yet all they see is "Sidewinder" on their comms system instead of your CMDR Name that they received when they were initially messaged.

I have a mixed record regarding to interacting with other players. My first interaction was when another player interdicted me. Instead of fighting back, I panicked, made a run for it in my Viper, was about to jump... and bang, he got my thrusters. We then had a polite conversation before I consented to him blowing me up as I wasn't going anywhere. I've sent messages to other players as well; I warned a trader of an impending interdiction from another player. He thanked me and stopped him from getting behind, although I faced an interdiction afterwards however I managed to evade. I've been in conversations with a few Lugh Freedom Fighters and with some mercenaries in the Imperial combat zones. On the flip side, some Commanders don't seem very talkative, but in my experience I've found more who are rather than less.

All good points here, it took me a few days to figure out how to respond to Commanders when I first started. I also noticed that of those Commanders who did transmit back, the conversation was wonderful and I made some decent friends in the dark abyss of space. There is one Commander I see near daily out in my system off in the boonies; we don't talk much but when we pass eachother in system it always turns into one of those "Hey Earl!" "Oh hey Joe" scenarios and that is it.

Thank you very much folks, I didn't think I was being ignored and the mass of quick responses on here certainly suggest the community's a friendly bunch.

I hope I run into a couple of you out there some day. ^_^

Don't worry. It's hard to get people to respond since mostly they aren't noticing the panel. I usually go directly for voice comms to get their attention and then chat. Mostly we stay with voice comms though. If you ever see CMDR BacioiuC, send him a hi :)

I presumed it was an AI pirate, so I in my mind I though 'lubly jubly, another bounty on the way' and let him interdict me.

I was wrong. Very wrong.
