Trying to decide on Eagle or Hauler for first real ship!

So I just got enough credits to either get a Hauler or an Eagle. I know there have been a lot of complaints I have found from Beta where the Eagle was not worth it and the jump distance sucked etc. I am wondering has that changed and is the Eagle worth getting or should I go with the hauler and do more trading and haul missions to try to save up for a viper or something?

One thing I will say is I have been interdicted SOO many times by NPC's in my sidewinder and I dont even try to fight I just do everything I can to run and have gotten away so far. I wish I had a ship that could take more of a beating and/or defend itself a lot better than the sidewinder which is why I thought maybe Eagle would be worth it but I may be wrong on that.

I tried to engage in combat just last night in a low conflict zone with my sidewinder and got my BUTT BEAT BAD lol. I limped out of there with 6% integrity so I won't be trying that again with a SW.

Thoughts?

Personally I'd go for a Hauler. It's just a little puddle-jumper, and no good in a fight - but it's a heap of fun to fly :) Plus you get to laugh at Vultures who blow you up for the lulz.

Of course, you can always stay in the Sidewinder and fully upgrade it, and learn to fly it to it's fullest. You may show a lazy Vulture pilot a thing or two.

Eagle - eeeeeeagle

if u like combat hop in an eagle. RES sites have the potential to make you way more credits than trading at this point. however thats all it is - potential- some res sites are crappy.

trading is more reliable i guess. unless u get blown up somehow with a hold full of cargo.

If you have just enough credits, you do not have enough credits. Don't forget that outfitting your ride is a bigger expense than the frame itself, plus you want to have enough creds to cover at least one or two rebuys if you get popped doing something fun like wallboosting or being eated by a star.

After that it depends on what you want to do. Hauler makes a good starting trader, and a respectable yet cheap long range travel/exploration ship. It's SUPER easy on fuel. Eagle is for pewing more than anything, and just really fun to fly, but defense really isn't its game. It's a fast light fighter but it is made of paper when it gets pounded.

Wait, are you saying I am suppose to laugh about getting blown up in a hauler? My goal is not to get blown up and take the fastest route to getting a viper or something. :) so far i have been doing cargo hauling in the sidewinder but thats mainly cause i cant do much else and its pretty stock except for the fsd.

Ok wait, just to clarify... If i buy either of these ships, wont they come with stock stuff like the sidewinder did or are you saying i have to buy ALL that. I understand i need to upgrade the stuff i just mean it doesnt come as an empty shell right?

if i upgrade a hauler would it be able to do an occasional bounty or fight off a pirate? If so that might be the route i want to go and maybe save the pewing for my next ship. I want to feel confident but i dont think the eagle will give me that feel if it is made of paper machet.

If you want to get some experience in combat and learning to manouver and survive, get the Eagle. It's fun, cheap but unforgiving of mistakes.

If you want to keep saving up money, get the Hauler and max out the cargo racks so you can get the most profit from it. Trade for a few days and earn yourself a Viper.

Viper will help you really get into the combat as it is a tough and capable fighter (though only a fighter, you wont do trading or exploring in it).

Alternatively keep hauling cargo until you can get the Cobra. The Cobra can haul cargo, it can explore and it can fight. It'll be your go-to ship for a long, long time.

It depends on what your cup of tea is. If you're a trader, go for the hauler. If you're a fighter, get the eagle.

That said, I started the game with the sidewinder and a freagle, but even if I had to buy the eagle, I think I would have. Trading isn't very profitable early and I think you'll gain more learning to fly the eagle in combat than you would just trading with the hauler. I don't mean just credits, but genuine piloting skill which will help you later on.

This brings up another question... Say I buy a ship and dont really like it and want to trade it for another one. Can i sell it for the same amount i bought it or would i lose credits buy doing that (like a used car or something lol)

Spacecraft hold their values very well compared to cars.
If you really want to wring every credit out of it, sell the parts you upgraded, separately.

Yeah, you get the basic stuff that comes on the frame, but it is BASIC. Upgrading allows your ship to blossom to its full potential; many rides really shine once you've put some work into them. You can easily get the Hauler into 27-30Ly jump range without dropping essentials like a shield.

A good first set of cheap upgrades is to swap out some of your E-rated for some D-rated kit. Ds are the lightest kit in each grade, so swapping out your stock E Life Support for example, gives you a a few more minutes of air and a few less tonnes on your overall mass for jump range.

Unfortunately for a Hauler, offensive capability is not a thing that it really does, it's got a single size 1 weapon slot, most likely for putting in a mining laser. Adder, however, is actually armed enough to do light bounty work while trading, a size 2 and two size one slots lets it put a nice bite out for what it is. I ran a C2 pulse laser with underslung twin C1 multicannons, and it didn't do too badly for me. If you're looking for the first all-rounder, you might want to save for the Adder over either Eagle or Hauler.

Eagle is FUN for combat. Decided to try it out last week and loved it.

Although primarily I am a trader, so the hauler was my choice.
You may want to consider holding out a little bit for the adder since its similarly priced and better all around. I did like the hauler cockpit though, it felt cozy.

My ship progression was Sidewinder > Hauler > Adder > Cobra > Type 6 > ASP > Type 7 > Imperial Clipper (Soon... just need that one more rank!) I occasionally used viper/eagle as a secondary ship, never as a primary though. They're great but don't fit my usual play style.

I almost made that choice but I held off until I could get the Cobra because I was making a decent amount in my Sidewinder and I pretty much had it upgraded all around because it was maneouverable and I could take people out with my piloting skillz. That being said, that route you have no real cargo space and you are pretty slow so if I had to make that choice I would go Hauler because you can make bank trading for a while and grind until you can get a really awesome ship.

thank you thats very helpful! I actually didn't even know about the Adder maybe I should go with that one instead of either of these to keep the balance. I currently have about 65,000 credits so i may have more options than i thought lol. I just need to find a place that sells one.

Had the same choice, but held off until I could get the Adder. Much better cargo space than the Hauler if you're the trading type (as I am). Was worth it.

Expect to lose about 10% on the spaceframe. Sell or downgrade everything you can and if you can downgrade below optimum, even better. Otherwise you lose 10% of the module cost, too.

Modules sell for 100% so you can mess around with outfitting as much as you want.

Stick to the Sidewinder. It's a great little ship and with a few upgrades you can easily kill Cobras, Asps and Vipers etc!

The Hauler is rubbish. You can easily make credits faster bounty hunting than you can crawling around in one of those tin cans trading!

Wow lol. What upgrades do you recommend that would accomplish that task in a SW?

It comes down to what you want to do:

Fighting:
Do you like fighting? And want to progress by Bounty Hunting? Grab an Eagle. It is a competent little ship.

Exploration, Trade Missions, Trade:
Grab a Hauler. It has way more cargo, way more jump range.

Progress as fast as possible:
- grab a hauler, trade rare commodities for 150ly. Two runs with a cargo full of rares and you fly an Adder or even a Cobra.

Well from your play style so far I would suggest the hauler and get into trading rares. Which would be the most lucrative way to go. I got into a cobra after one trip after buying an adder, the next day I was in an asp. Just be wary of pirates and I would avoid the lave area for the time being. If you do get interdicted by a pirate comply to their demands run and you will likely die.
but
if you want to get into combat I'd reccomend the viper. The eagle is a fun ship no doubt about that and everyone should experience flying in an eagle but it's not very efficient. The viper handles very well, is cheap, effective, fast, and has the capacity to take down any NPC with ease after upgrades and learning how to fight.
just be sure to downgrade or sell all of the components before selling a ship you only lose 10% off of what's on the ship when you sell it.
