Trying to do tutorial...stuck on weapons training

So I did the obstacle course and used my FSD to get to combat training. FWIW, using default Thrustmaster Warthog keybinds. Problem is I cannot switch fire group (default joystick button 5) as it is also mapped as select target ahead. So, I thought I would disable select target ahead (why the default mapping is done this way I have no idea) and I still cannot use joystick button 5 to choose the next fire group? what? In fact, I don't know who built the TM Warthog profile, but it's a mess. Lots of default flight setting don't work or are double entered (like thrust up/down) is supposed to be js hat up/down but those are also bound to select next target. Why would someone set up a profile that comes with the game that doesn't work as intended?

Isn't the Warthog two separate devices?

I can't recall ever seeing a default mapping with conflicting binds. Perhaps one of the binds is on the throttle.

Alternatively, it could be a bind involving a shift key. For instance, on an Xbox gamepad, the D-pad changes power distribution. X + D-pad does something else. Perhaps the binding is similar.

Notice the JOY 5 double mapped. Also note cycle next hostile target is also JOY 5. In addition JOY POV 1-UP is also double mapped to thrust up as are down/left/right as well below and to the cycle targets. These are just the few I've noticed starting the tutorial, I have no idea how many more are double mapped.

The client doesn't refer to different devices clearly. For instance, button 1 on my joystick is called "joy 1" in the game. Button 1 on my left-hand stick is also called "joy 1". If you have the stick and throttle, I suspect the same thing may be happening here.

Hit the Windows key and search for joy.cpl. How many Thrustmaster devices do you have attached to your PC?

Additionally, are you using TARGET?

I have the throttle and stick. FWIW, the game does actually differentiate buttons as my FSD is button 26. If I'm reading you correctly, are you saying that the game might have button 5 on the throttle and a button 5 on the stick. Nope, the WH doesn't work that way as the game correctly identifies and labels each button separately. This issue here is that Frontier has a bad, default mapping set up for the TM Warthog. There should NOT be two JOY5 or POV-1 mapped to different actions within the game. I appreciate you trying to help, but maybe I will send in a support ticket and see if Frontier responds.

Man, it makes a returning player want to give up. I think many players simply get overwhelmed by ED setups. I can't for the life of me understand why a default profile from Frontier would have issues like this.

Some of the images I've seen suggest that the highest hat on the right side of the throttle quadrant handle triggers buttons 3, 4, 5 and 6 - the images also suggest that buttons 3 and 5 are mapped to firegroup switching.

You can always test this by selecting any control and clicking on the alternate mapping area. You then try right throttle hat 1 up/down - if it's mapped to something else, a warning will pop up, telling you what other control it is mapped to. I suspect it will tell you it's mapped to "switch firegroup".
