trying to install elite with steam finding it difficult

I have an existing account of elite dangerous installed directly from frontier and I am trying to buy and install a second copy of the game from steam as I want to play through the game again as a different commander. It becomes an issue when my frontier account has the same e-mail as my steam account. I have tried to set up a different frontier account with a seperate e-mail but have not been able to link the steam account with it, any advice would be welcome.

Yep.

What happens if you try? My guess is that both accounts (steam and FD) are now (after your attempts) linked to the same CMDR, so you'll ned to unlink them before you can link your Steam account to a new FD account. Either try Google or support. If you try support, it might just be easier (for the future) to link your old FD account to your new email - that way, you will have at least the same email for the linked Steam/FD account.

errrmmm... ok, reading the above, I become confused myself, so let me try it this way:

Now:
mac@millan.com -> old FD account
mac@millan.com -> Steam

mac@millan.com(Steam) linked to mac@millan.com(FD) : 🤯

So:
1) unlink mac@millan.com(Steam) X mac@millan.com(FD) -- unlink, may need FD support - and don't even think about proceeding until you're clear here
2) move mac@millan.com(FD) to mic@millan.com(FD) -- change email address, minor operation
3) link mac@millan.com(Steam) to mac@millan.com(FD) -- now you can proceed using the same email address for the same account on Steam and FD

Thanks for your help guys, I've been given a refund from steam after explaining the problem and yes, the steam version was taking me to the frontier commander I've played from the start. I've decided to pay the full whack and install a new copy from frontier ( on a different drive, because of Odessey ). I don't really mind paying the full price as its a really interesting game. It might be simple for some people to unlink accounts, but that thought would have me scratching my head and banging on the keyboard if I get it wrong.

I think that you can only buy either a Steam or Epic copy from Frontier now, since they changed the system some time ago

Since Steam have already given you the refund and your current copy is now unlinked just set up a new email account and use that to create a second Steam account and a second Frontier account linked to the new Steam account. (Or you could start an Epic account with the new email instead)

If you use your current Steam account you could run into issues later if FD decide to retire the Frontier accounts and migrate everyone to either Steam or Epic.

But I don't think they use the ED Launcher any more, I think you have to use Steam or Epic to run the program. Unless I have misunderstood, which is quite possible.

Wrong. You can get the launcher in your frontierstore account if you bought directly. It's listed under "My Downloadable Products".

Alternative link: http://hosting.zaonce.net/elite/Client-Installer.exe (also works with steam purchased licenses created before April 2019)

You learn something every day!

I knew with the earlier purchases you could, but didn't realize that you could with new ones too.
