Trying to justify spending £600 on a VR headset

For those interested, Aces High III is a W.W.II combat sim that combines air, land, and sea combat in on-going battles of 100+ players. The full game is free to download and play unlimited offline. Online has a two week free trial as well.
It looks fun, but $15 a month? Sorry, I play ED in VR - I don't have that kind of money anymore.

After having the Oculus for 1 week, I returned it as was my original plan. I was going to get the Vive, to try out, but, I've decided to wait that out. Here is why:

1) I have 3 small kids and a wife, with the Oculus on, I cut them out of my life.
2) I cannot do a 30 minute quick repositioning log on with VR.
3) The Galaxy map drove me nuts, I couldn't deal with it.

While 4K doesn't offer the same immersion, it's good enough until the Galaxy map is fixed. That alone was enough for me to not use it!

but, the SRV was AWESOME
I thought the same about the galaxy map as you as first, but now that I have properly mapped it to my hotas, the galaxy map is amazing, I can scroll/move/warp/select with easy to anywhere in the galaxy, zoom in/out. All while getting a proper sense of distance and direction, its great IMO. But just KB/M yeah its painful.

Fair play mate. I love VR but I respect your reasoning and I totally agree about the Galaxy map. I will and am putting up with it... but it is super annoying.

I just travelled to the center of the galaxy and half way back in VR. I had no problem with the galaxy map. I appreciate that mouse usage is problematic but as has been said with proper mapping to a hotas or the Xbox controller it's a breeze. I use the mouse for zoom, rotation and elevation and the hat on my throttle to move the cursor. Works like a charm.

I'm struggling with it a bit. I actually started a thread about it but nobody replied so I'm assuming it is something I'm doing wrong.... I'll get there :)

I found I didn't even have to configure my setup and the mouse already functioned as zoom rotation and elevation and the throttle hat already was set for back and forward and left and right. Make sure the grid is on and locking a star becomes easy. GL

Could you describe the bindings you've used?

I completely understand the money issue. The reason I mentioned Aces High is that it is VR compatible, you can download the full game free, and play unlimited time offline to try out your new toy. Something else to VR with besides ED.

Not enough mention of the OSVR here.

Two DK models available:

HDK 1 @ 60fps for $299.99
HDK 2 @90fps for $399.99

I have high hopes for a consumer version of this, so will hold out. I hope the released product is up to scratch, and I've heard positive htings about the lenses used (no god rays and the like), which is a great sign.

Here's to hoping for a great product. I'm an early adopter generally, but not quite HDK early...

The rez has been compared to more like the PSVR at the moment so not quite ready for primetime or ED players I would think. I imagine it will only get better as time goes on though. We shall see.

HDK 2 has similar minimum PC hardware specs, and ships with the same display, as Rift & Vive, so it may have already overcome any relative resolution deficiencies.

As they're marketing this as a tool for the creation of an open-source VR standard, I'm not sure the HDK will be morphing into anything consumer oriented for at least a little while. It's likely that Razr will produce it's own branded HMD at some point, but in the meantime the HDK ships hardware with the same specs as Rift & Vive, and unless they're using an obscure supplier one has to imagine that the expensive stuff has already been QC'd sufficiently for a consumer grade device.

At least I'm hoping so, I 'll be biting bullets around Christmas.

I think the Razer/OSVR HDK2 may be nice, if you can get it working, but it still only has a 30-day warranty.
